General Information
--------------------
Name: Abarai Renji
Actual Age: 185 (Estimate)
Appearing Age: 18
Gender: Male
Appearance
Renji has brown eyes with long crimson hair that reaches far down his back, but is usually kept in a high ponytail, and his entire upper body being covered in tribal tattoo work. The amount of tattoos has increased over time, starting from his early days as a Shinigami candidate, to covering his entire back and much of the front of his body and his extremities. His expression is usually a confident, and, possibly arrogant.
He dresses in the standard Shinigami outfit, though he usually includes some sort of headgear, usually expensive glasses or a white headband. While out of uniform, Renji often wears a white kimono-like type of night clothing, with pink floral patterns on it, and a dark grey sash tied around his waist, helping it to stay in place, with bandages underneath. It has also been said 'that the women within his Division do not mind that he usually walks around in his night clothing'.
Personality
Renji's overall attitude varies from smug and cocky to disquieted and depressed after his major defeats, but shows himself to be an incredibly serious and determined fighter when confronted with an actual challenge. Renji is extremely determined, and will fight and die for anything he believes in. It's been pointed out that Renji is, in many ways, similar to Kurosaki Ichigo.
Renji also has a certain thing for sunglasses, all of which are from Seireitei's popular "Silver Dragonfly Glasses Store" and cost half a year's worth of his paycheck, which shows. However, every time he wears a pair, they are broken in one way or another. On these occasions, he replaces them with a tied white towel, until he can purchase a new pair of goggles. His dream is to once wear a pair that he has designed himself. He also looks for them in the Human World as evidenced in the latest Shinigami diary though he has no sense of fashion since he took some of the heart-shaped and star-shaped variety.
History
Childhood – Early Shinigami Life
Renji was born, and raised, in the 78th district of Rukongai. He was an orphan, who led other Rukongai orphans to help them survive. One of the orphans in the group was Kuchiki Rukia, who would be a future member of the 13th Division. Renji and the other orphans survived by swiping food and water when they could, and occasionally candy if they were lucky. Although Renji, and Rukia as well, noticed they had high reiatsu, they remained with their friends instead of becoming Shinigami. That is, until all of their friends died. After they died, Renji along with Rukia enlisted in the Shinigami Academy.
Upon arriving at the academy, Renji was placed in the advance class on account of his skill in swordsmanship. Renji quickly discovered that what he had in sword skill, he lacked in kido. Not too long after joining, Renji befriended fellow freshmen, Kira Izuru and Hinamori
Momo. Renji's relationship with Rukia soon became distant, nearly dying, when she was adopted into the Kuchiki family as Renji felt he had no right to be around her, now that she was a noble, though both seemed saddened by losing each other's company. After seeing Kuchiki Byakuya for the first time, Renji swore to one day surpass him.
Renji, Izuru, and Momo all joined the 5th Division under Captain Sosuke Aizen and Lieutenant Gin Ichimaru, though the three were quickly separated. Hinamori stayed under Aizen in the 5th Division, while Kira transfered to the 3rd Division under the new Captain Ichimaru. Renji himself was moved to the 11th Division under Captain Kenpachi Zaraki, rising to the rank of 6th seat. While in the 11th Division, Renji befriended Madarame Ikkaku, who often helped Renji train.
Shortly afterwards, Rukia was to be sent to the world of the living. On the same day, Renji was made a lieutenant, in the 6th Division under Captain Kuchiki Byakuya. Renji's friends, Izuru, Momo, and Ikkaku suggested that Renji see Rukia off, but Renji said no, wanting to wait until her assignment and his own promotion ceremony were completed. Due to a turn of events, triggered by Rukia lending her Shinigami powers to Ichigo, Renji was sent to Karakura town to retrieve her.
Agent of the Shinigami Arc
Renji first appears with Byakuya when they arrive at the human world to arrest Rukia. Their attempt is interrupted by Uryu Ishida, whom Renji easily defeats. Ichigo then arrives to stop them, faring better against Renji than Uryū had after unlocking his hidden spiritual power. Byakuya steps in to save Renji, cutting Ichigo's sword down to just a stump and severely wounding him. Renji is later seen checking on Rukia at her cell, trying to cheer her up by saying that Byakuya wouldn't let her be executed. Despite this, Rukia was aware that she would be executed, knowing that her brother held the laws of the Soul Society above all else
Soul Society Arc
After Ichigo's group invades the Soul Society to rescue Rukia, Renji goes out to fight him alone, blaming Ichigo for Rukia's troubles. Renji, not operating under a power limit as he was in the human world, does well at first, almost knocking out Ichigo in his first attack. Even after Ichigo figures out that Renji can only perform three consecutive attacks with Zabimaru, Renji easily outmaneuvers him when he attempts to use this to his advantage. Ichigo barely dodges Renji's finishing blow, and begins to pour his reiatsu into Zangetsu. Completely shocked at such refined reiatsu in comparison to their first battle, Renji is finally hit by a direct unnamed Getsuga Tenshō which defeats him and breaks Zabimaru. Before losing consciousness, Renji manages to walk towards Ichigo and explain the reason why he would not save Rukia himself, lamenting "the stray dog" in him. Realizing how powerful Ichigo is, he shamelessly begs Ichigo to save Rukia for him.
After being healed, Byakuya has Renji imprisoned, claiming that he had no excuse for losing if he was so eager to fight alone. In his cell, Renji has a conversation with his Zanpakutō's spirit, Zabimaru. While Zabimaru wants a rematch with Zangetsu, Renji insists that they are no longer enemies. He then breaks out of confinement and finds his way to Ichigo, who was in an underground training area with Yoruichi Shihōin, attempting to learn the Bankai of his Zanpakutō. Renji is fairly close to learning it as well, and walks off to a separate part of the training area to complete his training, alongside a materialized Zabimaru.
While Ichigo continues to train, Renji manages to achieve Bankai. He attempts to save Rukia on his own, only to be intercepted by Byakuya. Renji attempts to use his Bankai to defeat Byakuya, but both his inexperience and their difference in power leads to his defeat. Renji attempts to charge against Byakuya one last time, but only succeeds in breaking his own Zanpakutō against Byakuya's immense spiritual power. Byakuya leaves a dying Renji with his shawl and acknowledges that Renji's "fang" had finally reached him.
After being healed again, Renji makes another rescue attempt, this time finding Ichigo at the execution grounds with Rukia in tow. From the high perch of the execution stand, Ichigo tosses Rukia to Renji and orders him to defend her with his life. Renji willingly obliges and escapes from the execution grounds with Rukia in his arms. He barely makes it down the winding steps of the mountain they're on before being stopped by Kaname Tōsen, who teleports the three of them back to where they started. Sōsuke Aizen, having also teleported there, insists that Renji leave Rukia. Unwilling to do so, he attacks Aizen with Ichigo Kurosaki, though the latter had not entirely recovered from his encounter with Byakuya. Despite their combined efforts, both are easily defeated. After Aizen's escape, Renji waits in the hospital with Byakuya, who was injured while saving Rukia from Gin Ichimaru. When Byakuya asks why he is there, Renji responds that Byakuya is his captain and that if he weren't alive, Renji would have no one to challenge. Their conversation is interrupted by Ichigo, who was looking all over the Soul Society for Rukia. Renji is then seen at the gathering where Ichigo and his group returned to the human world.
Arrancar Arc
With the emerging threat of the Arrancar in the human world, General Yamamoto orders Renji, Rukia, Ikkaku, Yumichika, Rangiku, and Hitsugaya to aid Ichigo in the living world, and asks if Ichigo would let them stay at his house. When Ichigo declines, Renji goes to the Urahara shop instead, while Hitsugaya and Rangiku stay in Orihime's home, Ikkaku and Yumichika stay at Keigo Asano's apartment complex, and Rukia stays in Ichigo's house for the duration of their time there.
When the sixth Espada leads an unauthorized assault on the Shinigami in the material world, Renji fights the 15th Arrancar,Yylfordt Granz. Even with his Bankai, he is initially no match for him. Things get even worse when Ururu Tsumugiya interferes, injuring Yylfordt and forcing him to release his Zanpakutō. In his released form he impales Ururu with one of his horns and breaks Renji's Zanpakutō effortlessly. The tables are turned however, when Renji's power limit is released, allowing him to defeat Yylfordt with some effort. Renji remarks that if he had been fighting at full power the whole time, Yylfordt would have been more cautious, and might have won.
After the battle, Urahara allows him to live at his shop indefinitely. However, Urahara has persisted in avoiding Renji's questions (which is the primary reason as to why Renji decided to go to the shop). During his time there, he helps train Yasutora Sado to increase his ability, because of an agreement Renji made with Urahara: he will do whatever Urahara asks of him for the next three months in exchange for the answers to all of Renji's questions.
Hueco Mundo Arc
When the Arrancar launch a second attack with the purpose of distracting the Shinigami while Orihime Inoue is coerced into working for Aizen, Renji and Chad are left behind at the shop while Urahara goes to aid their allies. When Hitsugaya's team learns that Orihime is with the Arrancar, Renji volunteers for Ichigo's sake to form a team and "force" Orihime back to her senses and bring her back. The request is denied and the team is instead forced to return to the Soul Society under the threat of Byakuya Kuchiki and Kenpachi Zaraki attacking them. Later on however, Byakuya gives both him and Rukia permission to enter Hueco Mundo and fight alongside Ichigo's group.
After reaching Aizen's palace and discovering five separate paths, the group prepares to split up. Before they split up, Renji talks to Ichigo about the need to respect his comrades' skills in battle and leads the team in a chant used by the Gotei 13 in the past, vowing to never falter and come out alive together. Afterwards, Renji is mistakenly chased by the Hollow Dondochakka Bilstin, even though they are allies. His appearance and attitude is enough to freak Renji out and convince him to run with the Hollow chasing after him. Both continue for some time after realizing this, arguing that the other should stop first. Eventually, Abarai senses Rukia releasing her Zanpakutō and stops, only to fall into a trap (along with Dondochakka) set by Szayel Aporro Granz, who mocks them and introduces himself. He reveals that the room they're in is designed to suppress Renji's Bankai, which was accomplished by analysing the corpse of his defeated brother, Yylfordt.
Renji learns of Rukia's spirit pressure disappearing through Szayel. When Szayel mentions that the Shinigami was called "Kuchiki", Renji, using his Shikai, immediately attacks Szayel. Despite Szayel saying that Renji would not be able to injure him with just his Shikai, Renji manages to do so. Regardless, Renji cannot manage to duplicate the feat, and is saved by Uryū, who quickly ends up in the same situation. The two join forces to deal with Szayel's minions. In order to give Uryū an opening, Renji uses Zabimaru to tie himself and Szayel together, and then uses a Kidō spell which injures them both. Szayel retreats, falling into Uryū's trap, a massive Gintō-triggered explosion. Szayel survives the explosion, albeit with near fatal injuries, and heals himself completely by eating Lumina. He then departs to replace his ruined outfit and formulate a new plan.
Renji and Uryū try to find a way out of Las Noches because their main target was to retrieve Orihime, not fight an Espada. They should also head out to help Rukia and Chad. However, Szayel manipulates the corridors to make them travel back into the same room. Szayel appears behind them, and releases his Zanpakutō. As soon as the liquid from Szayel's release makes contact with Renji and Uryū, multiple clones of them appear. Szayel then informs them that the device used to restrict their spirit energy has been deactivated, and that they can now fight against their clones at full power. After some time Renji activates his Bankai, causing all of his clones to activate their own. In doing so they destroy the room they are in and a now irritated Szayel disperses all of the clones of Renji and Uryū, saying that he will show them the "true power" of his Fornicarás. Szayel proceeds to use his Voodoo Doll technique on Uryū, which creates an Uryū doll out of him. Szayel hits the doll and reveals that he has control of all of Uryū's five senses. Despite Renji begging him to stop, Szayel rips the doll apart, and although Uryū didn't lose his legs, Szayel crushes the mini stomach organ inside the doll, critically injuring the Quincy. When Renji attacks, Szayel's Zanpakutō swallows Abarai, and creates a miniature Renji doll. Szayel rips the Renji doll in half and crushes his Achilles tendon, making him unable to walk. Though it seems they will be saved by Dondochakka and Pesche Guatiche's new technique, Szayel has analyzed even their strength as well, and easily deflects it.
Szayel's further attempts are interrupted however, by Mayuri Kurotsuchi who fights and subsequently defeats the 8th Espada. Kurotsuchi offers heal the two of their wounds, and chooses to heal Uryū first. Renji is concerned that the Espada will kill his friends, and pleads to Mayuri to heal him first since he needs to rejoin the fight; Mayuri reassures Renji that the only one of his comrades still fighting was Zaraki, who had arrived to help Ichigo. Mayuri warns him that Kenpachi and his opponent will tear him apart if he interferes, before he looks inside of Szayel's lab. He is healed of his wounds afterwards, apparently before Uryū as the latter was late to the battle.
Once Aizen, Ichimaru, Tōsen and the top 3 Espada have left, Orihime is left alone in Las Noches with Ulquiorra. Renji has been completely healed by Mayuri, so he heads to Las Noches in order to aid Orihime's rescue. He appears with Chad and Rukia to battle the Exequias, complaining that "There is no end to them" (the Hollows). Rudobōn is then taken on by Rukia. Once the Hollows stop spawning, Battikaroa appears. Renji and Chad attempt to fight him, but his sand properties makes him immune to their attacks. Seeing their attempts starting to be more successful, Renji and Chad decide to combine their efforts, using their strongest attacks to finally crack the whole of Battikaroa's body and head, defeating him. More Hollows then emerge from the sand.[5]When their battle is interrupted by the arrival of Yammy Riyalgo, Renji, like the others, is shocked by his massive size. Upon realizing that Ulquiorra has been killed, Yammy grows even larger in anger, ripping apart what is left of his jacket to reveal his tattoo. Renji then remarks to Rukia and Chad that since Yammy is the weakest of the Espada, they, who have all faced stronger Espada should be able to defeat him together. But at that moment, Yammy chooses to go into his released form, revealing that he is Espada number 0.
Renji is later seen unconscious on a pile of rubble while Rukia has been held captive.

Zanpakutō
--------------------
Name: Zabimaru[/li][/ul]
Translation - Serpent's Tail
Unreleased Appearance
Zabimaru's sealed form looks like a normal katana. It has a rectangular bronze handguard with jagged design on it and a red handle and sheath.
--------------------
Zanpakutō Spirit
--------------------Name: Zabimaru
Gender: Male
Spirit Appearance
Zabimaru's spirit takes the form of a two people: an adult woman and a small boy, attached to the female's waist by a black chain that is connected to a collar on his neck, the chain can however be removed at any time. The female is referred to as Saru (Monkey) and the boy is referred to as Hebi (Snake). Saru has dark green fur that covers most of her body, except for her inner abdomen and chest. She has green eyes, long, rose-colored hair (of similar color as the fur cowl that appears around Renji's shoulders in Bankai) that goes past her knees, and black markings in her hair that bear a resemblance to Renji's tattoos. Hebi has blue eyes and jaw-length crimson hair. He wears a robe similar to a priest's that is cut short to reveal much of his stomach, with long sleeves that extend well past his hands. He has a snake's tail on which he often balances on to sit in the air. The two both possess fangs.
Personality
The two spirits are shown to have an arrogant streak to them. Individually, the nature is rather different. While Hebi is rather childish and easily distracted, Saru is serious and straight to the matter at hand. The two of them have a tendency to argue with each other quite often like siblings. Despite their constant bickering, the two still care for each other. Zabimaru greatest desire is to keep growing stronger.
Relationship to Master
Renji is very fond of his Zanpakuto, to the point where he easily gets agitated upon learning
that it's gone or stolen without his knowledge. The two get along very well, and both have a seemingly identical personality. With minor differences.

Zanpakutō Shikai
--------------------
Call Out Phrase: Howl Zabimaru!
Translation - If Applicable
Shikai Appearance
In its Shikai, Zabimaru appears as an even longer blade, segmented into 6-parts; each segment is wider than the one preceding it from the hilt with 2 pick-like protrusions on the front and back of each segment, with the ones on the front much longer than those at the back. Zabimaru's segments grow in number almost without limit. The segments are connected by a stretchable thread, making Zabimaru more useful as a whip than an actual sword, though it can serve as a regular sword just as easily, thanks to Renji's swordsmanship. Zabimaru's guard and handle remain the same in its Shikai release.
Shikai Abilities
Higa Zekko
- Description of Attack - Renji can also use his spiritual power to take the disconnected/broken segments of Zabimaru and levitate them into the air, allowing him to execute a one-shot omni-directional attack, but states that it is damaging to Zabimaru and leaves Renji defenseless. It is pointed out that after using this move, Renji is unable to use his Shikai for an unspecified amount of time.
- Type - Physical
- Range - Short to Mid Range
- Limitation - Damages Zabimaru, and leaves Renji defenseless.
--------------------
Zanpakutō Bankai
--------------------
Name: Hihio Zabimaru
Translation - Baboon King Snake Tail
Bankai Appearance
Hihio Zabimaru is a massive version of its Shikai form resembling a skeleton of a snake. Zabimaru gains many more segments, which are much larger resembling a mix between a snakes vertebral column and the pick-like protrusions of his Shikai segments, and it also gains a snake-like head about the size of a small car. Renji is also slightly transformed, gaining a fur cowl around his neck. The cowl appears to be the fur of an ape and thus, the ape's skull could be seen over Renji's left shoulder while the rest of the fur extends to cover his right arm. Zabimaru itself, in Bankai form, does not literally "cut;" Renji usually catches his opponent with the snake-head of his weapon and smashes his opponent into the ground with it. The head has also proven capable of inflicting heavy damage through biting.
Bankai Abilities
Reconstruction
- Description of Attack - Hihio Zabimaru's segments are held together by Renji's spiritual power unlike in Shikai, allowing him to separate and reattach them at will. The segments themselves are extremely tough, making it extremely difficult to destroy Hihio Zabimaru. Even if a segment is damaged, knocked off, or even destroyed, Renji can simply detach it and reform (or reconstitute) Zabimaru.
- Type - Kido
- Range - Targets Renji's Own Zanpakuto
- Limitation - N/A
Hikotsu Taiho
- Description of Attack - This technique fires a dense blast of concentrated spiritual energy from Zabimaru's mouth. The technique costs a substantial amount of energy from Renji which usually causes an aftermath that breaks the segments out of formation.
- Type - Kido
- Range - Mid to Long Ranged
- Limitation - Segments of Hihio Zabimaru fall out of formation.
Enhanced Higa Zekko
[/blockquote][/li][/ul]
- Description of Attack - Renji can also use a much more powerful version of Higa Zekko, where all the segments detach, glow and sharpen using spiritual energy. Surrounding an opponent to execute a omni-directional attack of blades of spiritual energy. After use of this attack Hihio Zabimaru reconstitutes itself.
- Type - Physical
- Range - Short to Mid Range
- Limitation - N/A
Reiatsu Ropes
[/li][/ul]
- Description of Attack - Renji can separate his Bankai segments and use them to surround his opponent. By linking the segments together again with his reiatsu, Renji is able to bind the target.

Battle Sample: (Mostly)
Renji had been sent to Karakura town to keep an eye out for any unusual Hollow activity. So far he hadn't seen a single thing, though it had only been a couple hours. Renji was to stay until contacted and ordered to return to the Seireitei. Seeing as he had nowhere else to stay, he decided he'd go to Urahara's shop. He had stayed there before from time to time, and decided it was his best bet.
As he neared the building, he noticed Jinta and Ururu out front sweeping. "Hey you two, is Kisuke here?" he asked the kids. "I'm going to be staying in the world of the living for a while, so I wanted to stay here."
"Oh great, the free-loader is here to free-load again!" Jinta said, sounding annoyed.
"Hey, shut it ya' little punk! I will seriously screw you up if you don't stop calling me that!!" Renji shouted.
"Well you are a free-loader, I mean, what the heck do you even do around here when you stay?" Jinta asked.
Renji glared at the brat. "I do plenty you stupid runt!" he spat.
"Name one thing," Jinta said with a mischievous grin.
"Gladly," Renji snapped, "I... I helped with Sado's training when Kisuke wouldn't do it!!"
"Oh yeah, big deal. That doesn't make you much less of a free-loader." Jinta said.
Renji was about to spit a snappy comeback, and if it felt right, pop the kid over the head, but then he felt the tremor of evil reiatsu. A Hollow. Ururu noticed it too, but Jinta seemed oblivious to it.
Jinta continued his annoying little rant, "... I mean come on! You just sit around all lazy, eating food, drinking our–"
"Jinta, there's a Hollow," Ururu indicated. Now the boy sensed it.
"I'll take care of it," Renji told them, "just wait right here." He swallowed a soul candy, separating from his gigai, and jumped onto a nearby rooftop.
Renji dashed across the rooftops, jumping across the gaps between buildings, trying to keep his footsteps as light as possible. It wasn't long before he was coming up on the center of the reiatsu, and soon enough, he saw the figure of a Hollow. It was tall and thin, its right hand had long tendrils instead of fingers, and the left hand was replaced by a flat, hammer-like shape. Its mask resembled the face of a boar, and its skin was a purplish shade of brown. Renji took a breath, and grinned. Alright, he thought, time for something entertaining!
The Hollow looked up towards Renji, and jumped at the Shinigami. As the Hollow came down towards the building, Renji jumped at it, slashing it across the chest. They both landed on their feet, though the Hollow was angered now. It turned and dashed at Renji, who brought up his Zanpakuto and jumped up aiming a swing to cut off the Hollow's hammer hand. Before the sword connected with the Hollow's skin, the Hollow swung its hammer arm and hit Renji on his left side. As he landed, Renji grabbed his left arm and swore silently. "This Hollow is tougher than he first seemed... Now that Renji had a perfect feel of the Hollow's reiatsu, it seemed this Hollow was an Adjucha. "If you're an Adjucha, I'm going to need this! Howl Zabimaru!!" Renji cried, and as he gripped his Zanpakuto is shifted. The blade changed drastically into the familiar Shikai of Zabimaru. "Alright, now its over!!" he bellowed, swinging Zabimaru as he dashed towards the Hollow. Zabimaru extended in its whip form, cutting at the Hollow's neck. Renji followed up with another swing, this one to the Hollow's left shoulder, and decided to end it with a downward swing through the Hollow's head. The Hollow cried in pain, and vanished into nothingness.
When Renji returned to the shop, Jinta, Ururu, and his gigai stood in wait. "Seems like you did good, nyah." Renji's gikongan, Ginnosukem, said.
Renji nodded with a grin, and replied, "Yeah, definitely more than these two brats could've done..."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Jinta asked angrily. He glared at Renji furiously. This kid always ticked Renji off with his attitude, and apparently Renji ticked Jinta off as well.
Renji decided he knew how to persuade Jinta. "You know, it's not up to you whether I stay or not. The decision is really Kisuke's to make, however, I'll convince you I'm not useless to have around." He cleared his throat and grinned. "So, Kisuke is away like just now, and another Hollow shows up. This one is a Vasto Lordes, or worse, an Arrancar. You really think you kids could kill it? Hell no, I'll be able fight any attackers while Kisuke's away. How about it?"
Jinta paused, looking aggravated. Finally the boy replied, "That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard..."
"Oh just shut up you stupid little runt!! Maybe I should let you fight an Arrancar to prove my freaking point!!" Renji shouted. "Or maybe I should just kick your ass my self!!"
"I'd like to see you try! You think just 'cause you have some stupid Zanpakuto you could beat me?! Because you're wrong!!" Jinta growled.
"Guys, stop arguing, if Tessai sees you hassling Renji, you'll get in trouble again Jinta." Ururu pleaded.
Jinta turned around. "I don't care, Ururu, whose side are you on anyway?!" he shouted, as he started tugging ruthlessly on her hair. The poor girl looked pitiful, but Renji was just glad Jinta was harassing someone else.
"Whatever, I'm going in to sit down. And if you don't like it, big deal..." Renji said, waving goodbye and going inside. This place would never be peaceful as long as Jinta was around. He and Renji just rubbed each other the wrong way...
Casual Sample:
Renji was walking the streets of Karakura town, on the lookout for Hollow activity. He'd been getting dirty looks all day from passersby, probably thinking he was cutting school. Specifically that of Arrancars, and so far it had been a dull day. He hadn't seen or felt a single thing out of the ordinary, the only Shinigami-ish thing he'd done all day was a konso on the soul of an old man. Other than that, he'd just been walking around town. Renji stopped at a vending machine, and popped in correct change, then chose a pineapple flavored Ramune. He sighed, and opened it, muttering to himself, "This has been a waste. Nothing is out here, I might as well go back." Renji lifted the bottle and took a sip, then said, "I guess I'll see what Ichigo is up to, I've got nothing better to do." With that, he headed off towards Ichigo's house.
When he got there, he knocked on the door, finishing the last of his soda. After a moment of waiting he knocked again. Then again. Finally, the door opened, and he saw Ichigo's little sister, Yuzu, standing there looking feverish. "Hey, is Ichigo around?" Renji asked.
"No," Yuzu said, "it's school hours."
Renji looked inside and checked the clock. It was fourteen minutes past noon. "Oh, right, um..." Renji had to think up an excuse.
"Shouldn't you be at school too?" Yuzu asked him.
"I should ask you the same thing!" Renji replied.
"I'm sick, can't you tell," the girl answered.
Darn, Renji thought, What do I say? He thought for a moment, then said, "I was suspended." Yuzu looked a little surprised, maybe even a little nervous. "But, I was framed, I hadn't done it!" he added quickly.
"I'm sure you were," Yuzu said plainly, "anyway, Ichigo should be home later."
"Right, excuse me for interrupting your rest," Renji apologized, then he turned and headed back to the street. After hearing the door close behind him, Renji cursed, "Damn. Well, that takes that idea out. Or, maybe I'll just drop by Ichigo's school. Wait, then they'd think I was a student skipping class."
As he continued down the street, he thought of what he could do to pass the time. Before any ideas came to mind, Renji was stopped by a man wearing a police uniform. "Hey, kid, what do you think you're doing?" he asked, "You don't look like you're out of high school yet. I absolutely despise kids who break the rules. You think, just 'cause school is boring, you don't have to go!? You'll be in big trouble, I'll see to that."
Renji scowled. Just great, he thought now I've got the world's most serious truancy officer to deal with... Renji shrugged. "I dunno, that chemistry stuff is boring. When am I gonna use that crap in real life, why sit through it?" he lied. Renji decided he'd play the role of a truant, it seemed easier than coming up with another excuse.
"Lazy kids like you will never make it in the real world! I'm going to punish you severely!!" the officer said, "and trust me, I don't care who it's really up to, I'm going to take punishment into my own hands. I always do with you truants!" the officer exclaimed.
"You think you can?" Renji asked, "Look, officer, you don't want to mess with me. I've got some special training you could never compete with."
"I've got my own training too, you'll see." the officer growled.
Renji ran at the officer at full speed, and connected a quick jab to his chin. The officer fell back, and unconscious. "Dropped him with one punch, definitely not Shinigami material," Renji muttered with a cocky grin.
So Renji continued walking for a couple more hours, trying to stay out of sight mostly. Soon enough, he saw people wearing their school uniforms walking in the streets. He saw someone wearing a uniform like to the one Ichigo and his friends wore. Renji moved closer, and recognized it as Ichigo. "Ichigo, how's it going?" he asked.
Ichigo turned around, with a surprised expression he replied, "Oh, hey Renji. Nothing really, what are you doing here?"
"I'm in town looking for Hollow activity. So far, nothing," Renji answered, "so I decided I'd find you and see what you were up to."
"Oh, well nothing in particular," Ichigo replied, "why, is there any specific reason you wanted to find me?"
"Actually, I was thinking maybe we could spar at Urahara's place. I haven't had a good fight since the Arrancars, and you always have been full of surprises. I think it'd be a fun fight," Renji explained, "so how 'bout it?"
Ichigo shook his head. "No thanks, I'm not in the mood," he replied.
"Great, let's– wait what!?" Renji exclaimed. "Why the hell not!? You scared you'll lose to me!? That's it isn't it!? I don't blame you, but you still gotta give it a shot!"
"I'm not scared of you!" Ichigo replied furiously.
Renji smirked, "You must be," he said, "if you're turning down my challenge! If not, prove me wrong!"
"Fine you're on, let's go!!" Ichigo shouted, leading the way to Urahara's place.
"Ha," Renji muttered, "that was easy."
