With the Captains suffering casualties and heavy injuries on their side, all hope seemed to be lost... until Shinji Hirako appeared, along with the rest of the former Shinigami. Though the aid of the Vizards certainly helped to draw the battle in their favor, it seemed Aizen's power alone proved too much for them.
Kaen nodded, he completely understood alright. Mikhail just didn't want him meeting his sensei, normally Kaen wouldn't care. This time though, his interest had been peaked just a little too much for him to just drop it. "Yeah it's no problem, bad timing and all. Happens all the time." He opened his eyes and scratched the back of his head, he would've rather go straight to his sensei, but since he asked. "Uh yeah sure, why not." He'd need something to eat, especially if Mikhail was serious about the whole cliff climbing thing.
Kaen turned and headed in the direction of a close grocery store. They could just grab a snack there and keep walking for a bit. "Hey Mikhail, out of curiosity. Do you believe in ghosts, or spirits...monsters, anything like that?" He knew he was probably pushing his luck, but he wanted to know if what he was sensing from this guy was what he thought it was. After all besides the everyday spirit, the only other two he'd ever seen was the monster that killed his parents, and the legs of whatever killed that monster. He didn't even know what they were, his knowledge of the spiritual world was seriously limited. So if he as right about Mikhail, there was a chance his sensei could tell him all about that too.

Kaen and Mikhail started off away from the park, they stopped at a grocery store on the way to pick up a few things before Mikhail left to meet up with his sensei. It was better to have the extra snacks just in case, of course Mikhail was used to packing extra stuff at this point in case Lilith snatched some. They were just about there when Kaen off handedly asked him a potentially dangerous question.
"Hey Mikhail, out of curiousity. Do you believe in ghosts, or spirits,...monsters, anything like that?"
Mikhail raised an eyebrow and glanced over at him having a hard time hiding his suspicious reaction. Was this the question of an overimaginative, curious kid, or a from someone who was dealing with the same kind of dangers he dealt with from time to time.
"Uh, Spirits?... I guess. What makes you ask that?"
Mikhail started wondering why such a big secret was made out of things, maybe it was the chance someone would think you were crazy, but there was also the chance that you could inform someone about what was going on before they got into trouble. Maybe he could joke about it and find out.
"You gonna tell me you see ghosts?"

Kaen nodded his head at Mikhail's answer. Maybe he was right about him after all. When Mikhail asked him if he was gonna tell him that he saw ghosts, a small smirk appeared on the boys face. His eyes closed and he scoffed, "Maybe, I do come from a long line of Shinto Priests. Why do you see ghosts?" He shot the question back at the older teenager. It would be interesting to see what his answer would be.
Kaen turned his head in Mikhail's direction and opened his grey eyes so that they settled on him. Maybe he could sneak some more information out of this guy, all he had to do was keep on wording his questions carefully. That last one seemed to have got Mikhail thinking, but not the point where Kaen was worried if he had gone too far. He returned his attention to the path in front of him as he thought about his next question. He figured he might as well drop the bomb on this one. It was all about his reaction, if he tried to lie about believing Kaen it wouldn't matter. All he needed to see was the look in his eyes. "What would you say if I told you..." He turned once again to face the older male. His eyes dead and cold as they settled on Mikhail, "That I watched a monster kill my parents when I was six years old?"

Kaen closed his eyes and answered. "Maybe, I do come from a long line of Shinto Priests. Why do you see ghosts?"
That was interesting, that this boy came from a line of priests, when he shot the question back at Mikhail he kinda glanced off.
"Priests huh? They teach you anything?"
Kaen's response wasn't definative so it was hard to say. Kaen looked at him suddenly and kept up his mysterious line of questions and statements.
"What would you say if I told you...that I watched a monster kill my parents when I was six years old?"
Mikhail halted suddenly, his brown hair tousled by the breeze. He didn't look at Kaen but his head hung down slightly, his eyes were shadowed as he looked straight ahead.
"I'm sorry to hear that, what did this monster look like?"

Kaen shrugged his shoulders, "A few things, controlling "spiritual energy" and all that. Nothing too special." He was being truthful, that's all his grandfather had taught him to do. Control his spiritual energy nothing else. His uncle had taught him how to fight, but his uncle had followed the path of the priest. His parents didn't teach him anything, they were too busy trying to protect him. It made him feel guilty sometimes, like it was his fault they died. He knew they wouldn't want him thinking like that though, so he pushed the thought from his mind and kept on walking with Mikhail.
When he told Mikhail the bit of information that he'd never told anyone else, not even his own family members - though he was sure they knew- he watched for a reaction. And he had received the one he was hoping for. Mikhail had suddenly dropped the "I'm an innocent nice guy" act and picked a serious demeanour. It was like he was a totally different person. Kaen knew then that he was right about him, especially after he asked what the monster looked like. "Big, mask, hole in the chest. Seems like you know something about it." Kaen's eyes narrowed as they focused on the older boy, yeah he was definitely not giving up and finding out who and what Mikhail and his teacher are. One way or another he'd find out what happened eleven years ago, then he'd kill every last one of those things he could find.

Kaen answered Mikhail's questions as he asked them and Mikhail wondered what his childhood was like, being trained by priests early on to control his spiritual energy. Mikhail himself had only learned most things within the last few years. Before that it was all spontaneous, things that happened under stressful situations. Kaen started talking about monsters and Mikhail knew he was speaking with a kid who fought the same creatures he'd been fighting for these last few years.
"You're talking about Hollows, yeah, I know about them."
Figures he couldn't find a normal kid to talk to but maybe he just attracted strangeness now. Kaen still seemed normal to him but now Mikhail was slightly more wary. He breathed a deep sigh and leaned against the nearest wall out of the way of people walking.
"How long have you seen them?" Mikhail probably fought a hollow at least once a week now, give or take. Some weeks were better, some were worse. They seemed attracted to power. Mikhail stuck his hands in his pockets and looked up and down the street, introducing him to Samyeru didn't seem like such a bad idea after knowing that he was spiritually aware like Mikhail. Still the only thing was that it might not be such a good time, if nothing else he would mention Kaen to his sensei and see what he thought.
"Listen Kaen, I understand now why you would want to meet my sensei, and if nothing else I'll talk to him about you."

Hollows. The word rang through his mind over and over again. "So that's what they're called huh? Hollows?" He chuckled a bit, the name suited them well enough. A hole in the chest, probably where the heart should've been. Kaen glanced at Mikhail when he asked how long he had been able to see them for. He looked up to the sky and stared at the clouds for what seemed like an eternity to, but in reality it was only a second or two. He raised his hand and covered his eyes from the glare of the sun, " How long...as long as I can remember. Around when I was four I was able to see spirits properly, I've always been able to sense them though."
His was going back to the past now, remembering times he spent running around with ghosts instead of normal kids his age. All because his parents thought it was too dangerous for him to be outside for too long. He had never understood why though he finally figured, but at the cost of their lives. He never knew those monsters existed. When he was drawn back to the present by Mikhail saying he'd talk to his sensei about him, Kaen just nodded. He had every intention of meeting this mysterious teacher today, but Mikhail needn't know that. "What do hollows want?" he asked. He was always wondering why they went after his parents, but he could never figure it out.

"So that's what they're called huh? Hollows?" Kaen repeated the word that Mikhail had used and he nodded.
"Yeah, the bad ones anyway. I'm sure there's more to it, but even I'm still learning about things." People walked past on the street and Mikhail kept his voice down. Most were oblivious to the dangers of hollows, at least until they started destroying things in their path to find souls to devour.
When Mikhail asked how long Kaen had seen spirits he answered. "How long,...as long as I can remember. Around when I was four I was able to see spirits properly, I've always been able to sense them though."
Mikhail shrugged slightly, "Well you got me there then, I'm not real good at sensing them at a distance."
The best Mikhail had right now was when there was a spirit close, his breath emerged as a wisp like breathing out into the cold air.
Kaen nodded and looked at Mikhail, "What do hollows want?"
"Well, I've been fighting them for a few years now. Mostly they seem to want to eat me, well anyone really I think, but especailly those who are,...um, aware."
Mikhail had to think for a moment for that answer, it wasn't entirely correct but he wasn't completely sure. Aware meaning those that could sense spiritual entities. Those with strong spirits themselves.

By bad ones Kaen suspected he meant hollows, meaning that regular spirits like the ones he was always around had a name also, "So what do you call the good ones?" He asked this even though Mikhail had said he was still learning about them as well, but so far he knew more than Kaen did which was nothing. Kaen shrugged his shoulders when Mikhail said he couldn't really sense them at a distance, it wasn't something easily done he supposed. Kaen was just really in tuned with spirits having been around them for his whole life basically.
He fights them. Well if he fights them he must have a way to kill them, but from the looks of it Mikhail isn't concealing a weapon on him anywhere. I wonder if he has powers like me..., Kaen thought to himself. Looking around he pondered if he should ask Mikhail, seeing as they were already in depth with the conversation he couldn't see a reason why not to. "You fight them, how? Do you have a weapon you use, powers of some sort?" Kaen was truly curious, he had never met anyone outside of his family that could see spirits and even they didn't have powers like he did. So for him, meeting Mikhail was like running into a long lost friend.
