With the Captains suffering casualties and heavy injuries on their side, all hope seemed to be lost... until Shinji Hirako appeared, along with the rest of the former Shinigami. Though the aid of the Vizards certainly helped to draw the battle in their favor, it seemed Aizen's power alone proved too much for them.

Exactly how had this come about Nagase asked himself as he blushed a deeper crimson. She had stumbled into his arms somehow and he looked down and saw her looking up at him. She looked comfortable despite the blush on her face.
“Uh, could you…er, take a step back?” he stumbled through his line. It wasn’t that he minded her doing what she was but more that it was insanely embarrassing even if no one was around to see it. She had apologized but she had done nothing wrong. For one reason or another he didn’t really want her to let go but he would not admit that.
“I-it’s not a problem but, uh, this is a bit embarrassing you know” he looked away from her violet eyes. One day, he vowed to himself, Nagase Hisao would stop being flustered by women. Somewhere in the back of his head he knew he was lying to himself.
Changing the subject quickly Nagase asked “So what were you doing that you had a hollow after you?” He had yet to even ask her name he realized but he let his previous question stand, no need to fire a volley of questions at her right after having her arm torn to pieces and put back together.

She frowned a bit when he asked her to step away, so she did. She was really comfortable and safe near him, and even those few steps away made her feel cold and vulnerable. She barely shook her head at herself, she didn't want him to see. She shouldn't be feeling like this, she wouldn't.
When he mentioned that he was embarrassed, she grinned like a school kid who had gotten scorned for a prank. So that's why he wanted her away, eh? She giggled at him, and then let loose a brilliant smile.
He looked away, and she considered teasing him, but a serious thought crept through her mind. She had questions to ask, and she had to have answers.
He got to her first, and his question shocked her. It wasn't her fault that the hollow came to attack her, it just...happened.
"First off, I was just swinging on the swing, so I did nothing to make him come after me," she answered sternly, "Second, who are you? What are you? Why did you blade glow? Does that all happen to you shi...ni...gami?" she asked, in an explosion of questions.
She wasn't sure if he was a shinigami, or even what that was. But the hollow seemed like he knew what he was talking about. She put her hands behind her back, and looked into his eyes as she waited for his answers.

The grin she leveled at him made him go a brighter red if it was even possible. He was so bad when it came to being alone with women outside of a mission or something. He really needed to work on this, maybe he could rope one of his squad mates into helping him deal with his problems.
The flood of questions was not entirely unexpected but it still caught him off guard. He still wasn’t thinking straight after she moved away. He took a deep breath then another. He could feel that his face was burning but he forced himself to speak.
“I am a shinigami, one who cleanses the souls of the dead and takes them to Soul Society or elsewhere if they deserve it” he said. “My name is Nagase Hisao. And no, not all shinigami’s zanpakutō, I mean weapons, glow like mine. Every shinigami has a different weapon that has different powers. I happen to control light. I serve in the fourth division of shinigami which consists mostly of healers.”
He stopped to breath. He was surprised she didn’t know about shinigami since they had tried to kill all the…Oh. If she knew about the original shinigami plan to kill off most of the quincies he might be a great deal of trouble now. A grimace crossed his face before he spoke again. He banished that thought from his mind, he wouldn't kill this woman or any quincy simply because somebody thought it was a good idea. He would need some proof they were evil before he did that and this woman only, so far, affirmed that they work for the same side as shinigami.
“I probably shouldn’t have told you all of that” he muttered. He looked directly in her eyes just like he had during the entire time he spoke so she would know he wasn’t lying. “Perhaps we should go to the swings if we are to continue this questioning, I owe you some answers but I would very much like to rest my legs” he said as he gestured toward the swings that still, miraculously, looked mostly intact.
He moved to take a seat on one of the swings; he’d played on one of these when he was a kid. It brought back good memories. Great, he was losing himself in a train of thought again. His face became blank as he lost himself in his own memories. Some habits are just hard to get rid of.

Her grin made the man take the shade of a tomato, and she giggled. He was kinda funny in that way, she thought. Not even as he began speaking, the red stayed with him.
She listened intently as she absorbed everything he was telling her. So they cleansed souls, which made sense combined with what he said to the hollow. So he was purifying his soul, but what made him corrupt in the first place?
Nagase Hisao...she definitely wouldn't forget that name. So they all carried Zanpakuto, probably like that sword. But so they didn't all shine like that? Pretty interesting, and they sounded pretty cool, too.
So his control was over light, and there were squads. How many squads could there possibly be? There was a squad for healing, and so that's why he was able to heal her so well.
What a crap load of information.
He murmured that he shouldn't have told her all that, and she wondered what he had meant. Was he not allowed? Or did he just not trust her?
He told her that they should continue at the swings, so they silently walked over together. He had this way about him, and she couldn't describe it. But she did know that she enjoyed it.
She sat down on a swing and looked at him. Like herself, she figured that he was thinking about the younger years. The less complicated years.
She cleared her throat, and looked at Nagase. "So how many squads are there? How many of you guys are healers? Do you have a leader? Why shouldn't you have told me that? And lastly, but most important, where do you live? If it's not here, then why are you here?" she finished, and began inhaling. Damn, she really needed to slow down how many questions she asked at a time.

He snapped back to attention. “Huh? Oh right, my bad, got lost in thoughts of my youth” Nagase laughed as he listened to her questions. He rubbed his chin, how much was he going to tell her about Soul Society? Well, there was no law saying he couldn’t tell her so he failed to see the harm. It’s not like he was giving her the key to Soul Society and letting her in.
“Well, there are 13 squads and my squad is not the most popular, not everyone is cut out for healing and support. We do have a leader and a government; it’s kind of like feudalism from a little ways back for you humans.” Nagase took a breath before continuing. “It’s not that I can’t tell you, it’s just that most times it is more than you need to know. We have no law saying I can’t tell you about us. As for where I live, I live in Soul Society. I came here for that hollow. When a soul is corrupted, for lack of a better way to put it, we shinigami purify the soul with our blade and send them to the other side.”
Whew, that was pretty much everything he thought. “Wait” he suddenly said exactly what he was thinking “why is where I live the most important thing?” He looked at her confused. Why would that even be relevant? Nagase thought about it, well shinigami don’t appear around here that often. It might be a valid question.

She laughed with him as her thoughts were confirmed, and he was indeed lost in his youth. She listened, again, as he explained more of the world, and his life.
So there was 13 squads, with a type of government and with leaders. His healing squad is not popular, and not everyone was cut out for healing and support, eh?
He mentioned that it was more than she needed to know, but she wanted to learn more about the man. He was her savior...and not all that bad looking.
So he lived in some place titled "Soul Society", and they purify the hollow with their blades. That makes sense as to why he had cut into its mask, even after he decapitated the monster.
He asked why where he lived was the most important, but she choke up a little. She blushed and looked away, swinging higher and higher.
"I guess, I would just like to get to know you better...and if you lived close, I was kind of hoping you might..." she trailed off as her last word carried into the night.
She had no idea whether or not she was crazy to believe him. She only just recently found out about Quincy and Hollows, and now she had to accept that there were Shinigami. And now, she had to accept that there was this whole other world, called the Soul Society.
But that wasn't for Konan to worry about. She didn't believe in love, she believed in having a fun relationship. Then, much like a roller coaster, the ride would be over and she would move on to the next "ride."
"...date" was the end of the sentence that seemed to echo off of everything around her.

Eh? What? Nagase looked utterly shocked, did he hear that right? There’s no way he heard that right? His mind did backflips out of surprise. Him, a shinigami, dating a Quincy? That would be interesting. She was attractive and he felt like there might be something there. No nonono, she was way too young for him he tried to justify getting rid of his reaction. Maybe he was still on the adrenaline high? Nagase was very dishonest with himself, yet another bad habit.
“Do you even know anything about me beside the fact that I come from another world and can cut up crazy nightmare beasts? Hell you don’t even realize how old I am by comparison to you” he was flustered, so obviously flustered. He rocked the swing higher and higher. If he wasn’t used to being alone with women he was even less used to be asked out by them.
“I mean you’re young and I just turned two hundred a few years back now” he said. He was a youngster compared to some in Soul Society but still compared to a human. “Don’t get me wrong I’m not totally opposed but, ugh, my thoughts are in shambles” he sighed. He lost focus and, as the swing went high in the air he slipped.
“Son of a-“ he cut off as he smacked into the ground. He could get up but he felt like sitting here face down in the ground in his embarrassment. He deserved it for all the confusing and conflicting things he had just said. He was caught so off guard. He closed his eyes and attempted to gather his thoughts. This was shaping up to be one hell of a night.

She stopped swinging has he checked off every reason why they shouldn't date. She frowned at his reaction. Was she ugly? Fat? Was she not intelligent enough?
"No, I may not know you. I may know little about you, but I just get this feeling when I'm close to you. I'm sorry for mentioning it." she said, her voice quivering toward the end. She wasn't trying to guilt him, but he totally rejected her without a second thought.
He then revealed his age, and she didn't really care. Age was just a number, it meant nothing to her. After all, they were both over 18 and were both adults. She could do whatever she chose to do, and vice versa.
"Age is just a number...not like I was asking you to marry me." she murmured, obviously still sad.
He said his thoughts were in shambles, but she felt as if he was just trying to make her feel better. People say stuff they don't mean, all of the time.
He fell of the swing, and normally she would've laughed. However, as he was on the floor, she just stopped the swing silently and got up. Not trying to make noise, and not trying to conceal her movement either. She stepped on the sidewalk and walked down it.
She felt embarrassed, and sad. It was kind of terrible for her, the rejection hurt way more than it should have.

He heard her begin to walk away. He slowly got up and looked as she went. She looked dejected as she passed by him. That look, it did something to him. He didn’t want to see her sad, he didn’t like seeing any girl sad but this one hit him harder than most for no reason he could discern.
“You, Nagase Hisao, are a fool” Ange said finally entering the conversation “I know you want to accept her offer”
“But we are from different worlds…Literally, it could never work” he thought back at her.
“Have you tried?” she asked him. He had no answer. No witty remark to push it off. Meanwhile she got further and further away. He stood slowly and silently. He looked at her back. Nagase thought to yell, to say something, anything.
“I’m pathetic” he muttered. Powerless to move thanks to his own indecisiveness and sadness at his own idiocy he stared blankly. Something should happen, he shouldn't let her just walk away like this, he didn't even know her name!
“Let me make this clear for you Hisao, go after her or you will regret it” Ange said before he felt her retreat to see what he did. She was right. He would regret it if he did not go after her. He felt like he needed to and he didn’t know why. He built his resolve and decided on a plan of action.
Using shunpo he arrived directly behind the Quincy in mere moments. He could smell flowers radiating from her more powerfully when he was this close. It was somewhat intoxicating he admitted.
He placed his hands on her shoulders to stop her from walking away. “You know” he whispered directly into her right ear “I didn’t say no, did I now? Consider this my answer, I will make this work somehow. I don’t even know your name but there’s something about you and my curiosity demands I know more.”

She walked as fast as she could, her feet tapping the silent ground as she moved faster. Tap, tap, tap, tap. She allowed a single tear to fall, as she left the scene of that ridiculous night.
She was so embarrassed, and upset, that it was nearly disgusting. She hadn't even asked that much, she was baffled. She had felt a vibe with him, and thought that he might, too. All she had asked for was one lousy date.
She endures getting cut, she takes that he's old as hell, she takes that he refused her within second. But she couldn't ask for a date?
She huffed, angry with the actions of the man clad in black. He had made a complete and total fool out of her. She heard a nearly inaudible sound from behind her, and she turned around to see Nagase.
She frowned, wrinkles now forming on her forehead.
She listened to his whisper in her ear, and slowly her heart raised back up from its fall. She smiled again, and then finally turned around
"Thank you so much, Naga..." she whispered in his ear, before she stretched up, so that their faces were close to coming together.
She had no idea what she was doing. She knew it was probably wrong, she knew that she had no idea what she was getting into, and she knew that he was way taller than her. But, she wasn't thinking as she was stretching for the kiss.
And on that night, she would start a relationship that would end up breaking her very heart, and soul, in half.
