General Information
--------------------
Name: Akio Mamoru
Actual Age: 160
Appearing Age: 16
Gender: Female
Appearance
Akio stands at about five feet and eleven inches tall weighing in at about one-hundred and ten pounds. She has a dark complexion that is well contrasted by her dirty blonde hair which she generally keeps in a pony-tail pulled through her ball cap. Akio has a small frame, slender build with muscular arms and legs with a tiny waist and her chest is rather flat. Akio has thin eyebrows and her eyes are a basic almond brown. She has a strong bone structure and a cleft chin, she never wears make up and is often viewed as a Tom Boy with her gloves always on and a jacket wrapped around her waist.
Akio prefers light and loose clothes for movement and comfort. She always wears her ball cap, her gloves, and an old jacket her father owned wrapped loosely around her waist. She also wears a bracelet she made when she was younger, small hematite orbs held together with black cord. A small memento from her past. The last defining accessory one will always find with Akio is a cigarette in her mouth that is lit. A habit she doesn’t intend to quit anytime soon. She won’t even get into a brawl without a fresh drag from her favorite addiction. She tries to avoid the required clothing of Shinigami if at all possible because it just feels to formal for her. She keeps her Zanpakuto behind her so it doesn’t interfere with her movement and is quite often complaining about how awkward they are to carry.
Personality
Akio first and foremost hates all things considered, “Girly”. She despises the colors, the dresses and the roles that generally come with them. She doesn’t hold back in a conversation and will not refrain from putting someone in their place if it’s well due. She will however reserve judgment, she prefers actions to long-winded words and isn’t afraid for things to get physical if the situation demands it. She finds it fun in fact and has always been kind of a scrapper. She tends to let her emotions get the best of her and many see her as hot-headed, and sometimes even a liability—though none would tell her to her face. Akio isn’t the brightest crayon in the box. She is easily ruled by her emotions, short-tempered and isn’t exactly a people person. Despite this, when she does make a friend she holds on to them as long as she possibly can and sees them as family.
Akio let’s her drive and integrity fuel her desires to be the very best she can at sports. Being competitive is the only way she’s ever known. It helps her release any tensions she has with the rest of her life. Be it a run before the sun comes up, a healthy game of soccer, or even a friendly bare knuckle sparring with a friend Akio will not hesitate to get the exercise. She is however addicted to cigarettes to the extent at which to be without them makes things difficult for her to function. Due to where she’s grown up in Rukongai, Akio has aspired to become a member of the Gotei 13 to protect the people she cares about and defend those who lack the strength to do so, this is her main reason for wishing to join the Academy.
History
Akio’s family life was a pleasant one, that’s not to say that growing up wasn’t difficult. They lived in the 76th district of West Rukongai. A rough and tumble life for most, her family grew what they could on their land and sold what little they could spare in marketplace. Akio’s father Jirachi was a large man, standing in at about 6”2 and weighing in at about 325 lbs. He was the farmer’s son of a farmer’s son and had intended when his wife was pregnant that she too would bear a son to pass the family business along to, and instead, he was given a daughter. He loved her just the same but treated her like son instead of a daughter. All the manual labor, she was strong enough to do. All the sports teams she could get into, she could beat them all. You could say her father was the catalyst of Akio’s competitive nature. It meant no difference, the work on the farm had to be done and her father wanted a child he could be proud of so Akio strived for excellence in all sports and physic al activities she could get her hands on.
Akio’s mother was distant however, a business woman. Opposite of her father she was 5’3 and weighed in at about 115 lbs. A tiny framed woman, with fine bone structure and a strong cleft chin. Her hair was golden blonde and danced in the sun’s rays when the clouds were scattered. It was her job to take what they could provide for sale to the market place and even though she was a woman, she had to know how to defend herself. The long hours away from home made her emotionally null at times. Akio never blamed her for that but did wish there was something that she could do to make her mother smile again and be proud of. Akio had her mother’s almond eyes, and taken up after her mother’s alarming smoking habit. One of their crops had been tobacco and it’s where you would find Akio working when she had free time. Always harvesting some fresh plant to roll for herself and light up for that perfect temporary high. It kept her hands busy and gave her time to think.
Growing up Akio had a lot of issues with other children outside of her home life. She didn’t really fit in with the other girls, her hands and skin were tough and callused. She had to walk to the stream near their home to gather water for the farm but more importantly the bath. She was frequently dirty for days until her father forced her to take one. She fit in better with boys because of her love of horseplay, her lack of care in girly clothes and her love of sports and being active. She didn’t care for things to get violent to prove a point and it didn’t matter if she lost as long as said point was proven. Akio was somewhat shy however, she had difficulty making friends so when she did, she held onto them dearly. Defending her opinions and views as well as those of the ones she cared about with rough calloused hands of a farm girl.
One day it had gotten late and Akio was finishing up tilling the soil to her father’s specifications whilst he cleaned the home so his wife wouldn’t fuss when she returned home. It was unusual for her mother to come home so late, and Akio’s father was beginning to worry when she finally came home. She looked a little more rough than usual. Akio’s father rushed to his wife’s side when he saw her eyes drop and the fresh cut across her face. Over the next hour or so Akio’s mother had explained the incident in the market place. A recent gang’s uprising in a nearby district had reached their own and she had been assaulted on the road home. She couldn’t fend them all off alone and as she explained their threats to her family and as she did tears rolled down her elegant cheeks. Her father embraced her mother and promised her she’d never have to deal with that sort of thing again. He would send a request to the Gotei 13 to come investigate the recent crime outbreak in their district and that for the time being, she could watch over the farm with Akio and he would take care of the shop keeping.
Several weeks had passed. The family was quiet to each other after the incident they tried not to speak of it. Akio and her mother were smoking in family room by the fireplace around the time her father had been headed home. Her mother was knitting a blanket and Akio was rolling up a stash to hold her over for several days. She was licking the wrapper along the last one when suddenly she felt a horrible wrenching inside her stomach, the cigarette dropped from her fingers onto the table next to the lamp. The pain was sharp and unrelenting, it was something she’d never experienced in her life. One of the last things she remembered was her father’s voice and the door opening. Her vision blurred as a man entered their home behind her father as she fell out of her chair, hands still gripping her stomach as she landed on the floor with a sharp thud.
She awoke, the pain in her stomach still as the stranger crouching over her, his hands glowing and a smile on his face while her parents stood and watched with concern. The man went on to explain what had happened. What she had experienced in her stomach was hunger, and some food would fix that right away. Furthermore, the reason she had passed out upon his entry was because Akio had developed Reiryoku, a sort of spiritual energy inside of her body. It responded to his Reiatsu or spiritual pressure. He apologized and removed something that smelled amazing from his pocket and handed it to her. It was a bar of chocolate and it was the most exquisite thing she’d ever tasted. He smiled and suggested to Akio that this was a sign, and that if she was up to the challenge, she should apply to the school in Seireitei. Since the day he offered that challenge Akio has never turned back, and never turned down free chocolate…

It was a typical morning at the Shino Academy, Akio stretched and let out a deep and sleepy yawn as her back popped in several places. She scratched the back of her head and blinked several times looking around the room as her eyes adjusted to the light slowly pouring more and more of itself into the room. Akio’s right hand searched wildly across her bedside table until her fingers had located the soft, cigarette she’d rolled for herself the night before and her lighter. She placed it into her mouth and trundled slowly toward the door, grabbing her ball cap and pulling her hair through the back it fit snugly and felt oh so right. Before exiting she pulled her jacket off the coat rack by the door and wrapped it loosely around her waist upon exiting her room.
Akio’s thumb wrestled with the lighter several time before the sparks ignited into a single flame , she pressed the cigarette against the flame and inhaled slowly, allowing it to light. Her eyes closed as the first rush of nicotine entered her body and she expelled the smoke from her dry, cracked lips. She took in her surroundings a little more with each drag of the cigarette. The trees in the distance, the students bustling about for morning classes, a few girls complaining as they walked past the cloud that seemed to follow Akio wherever she went. Yes, this morning was just like any other. Akio leaned down and tied her shoes, finishing the last of her beloved friend right down to the filter. She flicked it off the railing and began stretching. Her foot rested on the railing as she squatted down and let out a grown with each muscle tension and relaxation. After doing this to the other foot and few other simple stretches Akio was on her way, she loved morning runs. It helped her wake up and think and this day was not unlike any other.
Akio rounded the first turn of the path, there was a light breeze that felt gentle and cool across her face as the first few droplets of sweat began to trickle down her forehead. Her heart began pounding in her chest, she could feel the adrenalin kicking in now, the thrill was just what she was after. Akio loved this sensation. Her mind raced with thoughts of classes, people she’d met since she joined the Academy, then to her father and mother. She shook her head as several other joggers were slowly catching up to her. By the next two turns on the path they’d catch up to her. She pushed forward around the first turn and looked back. They were two males, both around her age. One was slightly taller than the other, he was muscular and had a dark tan. The other smaller one’s skin was more fair, he wore glasses and was constantly pushing them up, trying to keep up with his friend.
The larger one sounded as if he was egging the other one on in what some would view as ‘motivation’. “Come on Hasuke! No pain, no gain!.”
The smaller one heaved and was slowly losing his friend. “Ju…just wait…” Hasuke broke his speed and came to a slow stop, heaving over he pressed his hands against his knees and tried to catch his breath as his friend sped off yelling behind himself,
“See you in Hand-to-hand training Hasuke! Hope you can beat me there!”
Akio shook her head. She couldn’t believe this guy just left his friend like that. Not to mention an insult like that, she thought to herself for a moment, this guy seemed pretty cocky. Perhaps, he needed a taste of his own medicine. She slowed down a bit pretending to be getting tired, in fact she came to a complete stop. Akio removed another cigarette from a container in her pocket, placed it between her lips and lit it. Taking a drag as the other student rounded the corner. She caught him looking her up and down and slightly grinned before returning to his competitive face and slowing down. He was running in place when he reached Akio.
“Hey there, you uh you look familiar. Do I know you from somewhere?” Asked the cocky boy, trying to make conversation and failing at it as Akio leaned up against the tree behind her, taking another drag and purposely blowing it in his face. He coughed a little before she replied,
“Perhaps, you may have seen me around in one of our classes. Kido…or art, maybe even hand-to-hand combat—I’m at the top of our class in there.” Akio said with a bit of attitude, cocking her head slightly and raising an eyebrow. “What’s it to you if you do?” she said inhaling another drag letting the nicotine sink in as her heart regulated. The boy seemed somewhat taken aback but quickly recovered.
“You seem like someone who could use a running partner for a little friendly competition. I’m competitive enough.” He laughed boisterously at this then continued extending his hand. “Name’s Gorakai, and yours is?” Akio stomped her foot impatiently for a moment. She had known his type all too well. Strong, competitive , likes to show off in front of others. It was a male version of herself. She smirked and replied,
“I could definitely use a little friendly competition so I’ll tell you what,” she leaned in like she was going to whisper, “ You beat me and Hasuke to class and you can have my name.” With that she shoved him hard but playfully so he’d lose his footing and flicked her cigarette out of her mouth as she hurtled up the trail, leaving Gorakai shaking his head confused a moment before he started after her,
“Hey come on, that’s not fair. Wait up!”
Akio yelled behind her with a grin stretched across her face, “Come on Gorakai, no pain no gain! Remember!” Akio let out a dark cackle as she continued towards class, her footsteps hard against the ground, focusing on winning. Because what else was there but victory?
