General Information
--------------------
Name: Nagase Hisao (Surname, Given)
Actual Age: 202
Appearing Age: 20
Gender: Male
Appearance
Hisao stands at 5’9” and weighs around 130 pounds. His blonde hair is unable to stay slicked back and as a result tends to look unkempt with it just falling where it may. He sports brown eyes that are the focal point of his otherwise nondescript face. His glasses are standard issue oval shaped glasses that are quite snug on his face. He also has a small amount of stubble where a beard could grow if Hisao desired it though he has always seen it as more of a bother than it would be worth to take care of so he keeps his face mostly clean shaven.
Hisao’s body is rather thin and lacks defined muscle though this belies his strength. His skin is a slightly tan color that proves that he does go outside of the library but not excessively. Hisao’s left shoulder has a scar from front to back where a Hollow managed to land a rather potent blow and he keeps the scar to this day to remind himself that he is not infallible. Hisao has a pendant around his neck in the shape of a teardrop that glows faintly blue.
Hisao’s shinigami outfit is no different than any other one with no personal modifications to speak of. He wears his zanpakutō on his back with the hilt poking over his right shoulder. During the times where he is not required to wear the shinigami outfit Hisao generally just wears a simple shirt and slacks as well as a jacket.
Personality
Hisao is easygoing and very much the extrovert. Hisao’s face tends to feature a grin that shows his pleasant nature. Upon meeting someone for the first time Hisao will make every attempt to be friendly and generally pleasant. This, however, changes if he is interrupted while working or reading since being interrupted while focused is a massive irritant for him. Hisao is also quite stoic believing that as one who heals he should always make those he heals feel as if they are not imposing on him. This stems from his belief that he and others like him should be pillars in Soul Society that can be relied upon in any circumstance. Hisao is also naturally protective of women, that is to say that he feels sort of a big brother instinct toward most woman as a result of looking after his sisters for so long.
Hisao is almost always calm and composed though a few things tend to either embarrass or otherwise get under his skin. Hisao is not generally affected by feminine wiles but if he is directly singled out from a crowd he tends to freeze up from embarrassment. Hisao is also embarrassed when he discovered while training since he gets so focused on it and goes into a combat trance that he will utterly neglect someone who does not outright attack or interrupt him. The most embarrassing thing for Hisao is when someone finds him singing or humming since he thinks others might think less of him if he was discovered as having such an odd talent.
To his friends and allies Hisao will remain unyieldingly optimistic in the face of any struggle. He also fancies himself someone anyone can talk to since he is a good listener who will not judge whoever should need his assistance. He would willingly leap into the line of fire to help someone he cares about or he thinks he can save since he has trained to be a combat medic.
To his foes Hisao represents a wall of calm and persistent defense. He will use his knowledge of Kido and swordsmanship to assault those who actively seek to harm anyone who he sees as undeserving or sees as a friend regardless of the chance for Hisao himself to be injured. Without fail Hisao will battle until either he is incapable or he must retreat to restore his allies.
Hisao secretly still feels the burden of guilt over his sister Aoi's death. This weighs on him and to a degree his optimism is a facade to cover this up. He has yet to bring up his sister to anyone and, even if pressed, will refuse to speak on the subject with anyone. For this reason his family is a topic he tends to avoid in order to prevent himself from falling into his old ways. This guilt also reinforces his desire to protect women, especially those younger than him, in such a way as he feels that a big brother would and should watch over them.
History
Nagase Hisao was born to a middle of the road family as the eldest among three siblings. His sisters, Yui and Aoi, were twins born two years after he was. Hisao was raised lovingly and was able to serve as a protector for his sisters as they grew up, which is where his protective tendencies toward women comes from. As he grew older he read many books and wandered around Rukongai while he did so.
When he was of age to enter the academy he chose not to so he could continue his studies into writing which he seriously considered as his future. It was during this time that Aoi was killed. It was unknown why she was killed and the murderer never stated why. As the self-styled protector of his family, Hisao felt responsible for the loss of his sister and became interested in the shinigami after a few chance encounters with some of them. He came to see them as people with the power to help others and Hisao wanted that kind of power, the power to protect everyone.
Once he was able to he entered the shinigami academy and, after failing the entrance test the first time, proceeded to learn the ways of the shinigami. His time in the academy was filled with days spent in the library studying or talking amongst like-minded students who would rather read than fight. This changed once he learned of the importance of the zanpakutō. At that point Hisao began to spend equal parts of time reading, training, and enjoying the company of his circle of friends. The gems on his blade and neck are both gifts from his best friend during this time, Asahara Homura.
Homura was a girl whose looks did not draw attention to her but were still there for those who searched it out. She, like Hisao, was drawn to books for their potential to both impart knowledge and engage the imagination. They were fast friends and their circle of friends grew with them as the central figures. Homura gave him the necklace on graduation day right after confessing that she was romantically interested in him.
Hisao had been taken aback by her interest, being completely unknowledgeable in the realm of romance as well as feeling unworthy of it due to his underlying guilt over the death of Aoi. The act of turning her down led to a rocky portion in their relationship which was characterized by Homura’s absence from their group and Hisao’s silence. This rift developed and remained for years. It was during this time that Hisao truly became a hermit as he sought more knowledge and more strength to feed his need to protect everyone he knew.
Hisao’s first interaction with Ange, his preferred nickname for his zanpakutō’s spirit, was one of utter surprise. He had expected to have his spirit be at least the same gender as him and was startled to discover not only was it a woman but a rather attractive on at that. Ange was very much a guardian who sought to help Hisao grow but always felt distant to him. He slowly managed to get more information out of Ange though never a name. He had decided to call her Ange because he felt odd calling her Angel all the time and he felt it was too formal for someone who was supposed to be a piece of himself.
Having been a shinigami for years and a member of Squad 4 he generally was called to tend to heal the wounded and act as a support on some missions. He rarely complained though as he continued to read and practice his Kido with fervor while he decided on a squad to join. It was during this time that Hisao’s resolve was tested and his Shikai was activated.
On a mission to defeat a hollow he discovered the hollow had a rather disconcerting power. This particular hollow could take the form of others and the hollow decided to take the form of his younger sister Yui. Hisao knew it was just a hollow with his sister’s form and he cut it down without hesitation after it gave him the scar upon his shoulder. This particular purification struck a chord within him. Just how far was he willing to go to protect Soul Society? Would he have killed his sister as easily as the hollow to defend it?
While most would have thrown out these questions by simply stating that it was a hollow and thus did not matter the questions it brought to Hisao’s mind assaulted him. He hit a slump where his desire to do nearly anything was gone. It was then that Ange saved him.
“You defend those you love and the place they live, need you know more?” was her statement. The simplicity of it struck Hisao like a bolt of lightning. With it he rediscovered his will and his desire to protect his friends. That night he learned Ange’s full name: hareyaka na enjeru, the Radiant Angel. He formed his Shikai which was a crystalline katana infused with light and vowed to fight for Soul Society and his loved ones. He had learned one of the most important lessons he thought he ever would: You can’t protect everyone, people will die, it’s your job to save the ones you can and press on.
Having restored his will to be a shinigami and with newfound confidence he restored the friendship he had with Homura. Though the wounds they had both inflicted by their time apart were deep they still found comfort in their circle of friends who had returned to rally around them once again. With all of this at his back, Hisao has dedicated himself to working for Squad 4 who he still believes will allow him to use his knowledge of Kido to save and protect as many as he can.

Zanpakutō
--------------------
Name: Radiance
Translation – N/a
Unreleased Appearance
The katana that is Radiance is 65 cm in length. The hilt is a pure white color and sports a circular cross guard. The hilt has a small jewel of the same glowing blue color as the necklace that Hisao wears. Other than the above the katana is remarkably nondescript. The sheath it is kept in is as white as the hilt on the blade and the gem on the hilt sits at ear level leading some to think it is an earring rather than a piece of the sword.
--------------------
Zanpakutō Spirit
--------------------
Name: hareyaka na enjeru (Radiant Angel)
Gender: Female
Spirit Appearance
Ange, as Hisao calls her, is a tall woman with flowing blonde hair that reaches down past her back. Her body is beautiful with a large chest that Hisao finds rather distracting whenever he speaks with her. She has two feathered wings upon her back and a glowing white halo above her head fitting the image of an angel that Hisao has. Her body is covered in a loose white dress that flows down to her feet.
Personality
Ange’s mind is a mystery to Hisao. Ange is distant and very much secretive. She tends to keep her speech to concise points that get what she wants to say across easily. She is, however, very protective of Hisao and believes wholeheartedly in his goal of protecting people. She is almost emotionless and shows almost no sign of her feelings keeping a calm façade under almost any circumstance.
Relationship to Master
Ange is in sync with Hisao as the both share the same ideals. She will aid Hisao in times of need but otherwise she tends to let Hisao solve problems on his own since she thinks that is the best way for him to grow. She stands apart from him and refuses to influence any decision unless he is making a blatantly stupid one or has forgot a rather important detail. She actively holds back some of her knowledge and power believing that Hisao is not quite ready for it yet.
Inner World
Ange’s world is one bathed in eternal sunlight. She has a small lake in the middle where the sunlight is reflected perpetually. The sun is always up here though it does rise and set in cycles when it sets the sun simply begins rising immediately allowing for no time of darkness. Ange herself is generally found beside or above the lake taking in the view and it is also by the lake where Hisao appears when he enters the world.

Zanpakutō Shikai
--------------------
Call Out Phrase: kagayaku, hareyaka na enjeru
Translation – Shine, Radiant Angel
Shikai Appearance
Radiance fuses with the gem attached to the hilt and, in a burst of light that looks similar to the sun, turns into a crystal katana of the exact same dimensions as Radiance is before Shikai except the circular cross guard disappears. The crystal is the same blue color that the gem is which is to say a deep blue. Radiance then lives up to its name as it begins to glow with a soft internal light, not enough to light up a room but enough to see by faintly in the dark.
Shikai Abilities
Name of Ability: tenshi no ikari (Angel's Wrath)
- Description of Attack – Hisao infuses Radiance with some of his Reiatsu and some light from the surrounding area and then, after a second, slices the air and releases a crescent of brilliant light that flies forward in the direction in which Hisao swings Radiance.
- Type - Projectile
- Range - 30 feet
- Limitation - The further the light gets from Hisao the weaker and fainter it is. Against a weaker foe (2 tiers down) the crescent will be more likely to cause temporary blindness that may last up to 10 seconds on top of cutting the foe extremely deep. For a weak foe (1 tier down) it will cut them somewhat deep and may blind them for no longer than 5 seconds. Against an equally matched foe it would cause a mild wound and cause the target to have some difficulty seeing which would last a maximum of 5 seconds. Against a tier above the crescent will cause minor cuts and will not affect eyesight. Against a foe two tiers up the attack will do nothing but perhaps cut the fabric of the foes uniform. This technique uses 15% of his total reiatsu with each use.
Name of Ability: tenshi no hogo (Angel's Protection)
- Description of Attack - By drawing in the light and reinforcing it with Reiatsu Hisao crates a bubble of light that can withstand attacks.
- Type - Shielding
- Range - 10 feet with Hisao at the center
- Limitation - This attack will negate attacks of a spiritual nature and deflect physical assaults of varying intensity depending on the strength of the foe. Against a weaker foe (2 tiers down) the shield will hold out against as many as four or five attacks. For a weak foe (1 tier down) the shield will hold against three attacks. Against an equally matched foe it will hold up against two attacks. Against a tier above it will hold up against only a single one and will burst as a result causing Hisao to fall backwards from the attack. Against a foe two tiers up it will simply pop like a balloon causing Hisao to lose balance and suffer damage from the shockwave of the sudden destruction. This costs about 10% of his total Reiatsu each time the shield is broken and 5% if the shield is not broken but reabsorbed (i.e. if an equal tier opponent hits once and then Hisao drops the shield he loses half the energy instead of the full 10%)

Hisao sat on the edge of a building in the part of Rukongai he had grown up in. He looked down and saw his sisters in the distance though they could not see him from their vantage point. He had a smile on his face because the grins on his sister Yui’s face told him they were doing well. He had not seen them in a few years thanks to Soul Society keeping him preoccupied but he did keep tabs on them now and again while he was on patrol.
A voice called out from behind him and he immediately recognized the sweet tone. “What are you doing around here Homura?” he inquired as he turned to face her. The woman who appeared in front of him was an old friend. She looked past him to see what he was looking at and figured out pretty quick what he was doing.
“Watching them again?” was the question she put forth. Hisao nodded to affirm her suspicions. She sighed and he knew that she though he was still being a bit odd but to Hisao it calmed him to know they were doing well even if it meant he didn’t run into them and talk. “You’re an odd man you know that Hisao?” she put on a frown as she looked at him.
“I suppose it is a bit odd” was all he said as he turned back to his family in the distance. Sometimes Homura had asked why he didn’t just go see them. He had always responded with the same answer. “I have to work hard to make sure they never have to worry about anything other than finding their own happiness.” That was the reason he pushed himself. It may be absurd to some but he was fine not talking to his family if he knew the work he was throwing himself into kept them safe.
“Sometimes I still wonder why I fell for you back then” Homura suddenly interjected into his internal process. That’s right, some years ago he had been confessed to by this woman. He had turned her down not out of dislike but more out of a lack of feeling. “You know, now that we are friends again, I hope you don’t mind me saying but you were a worse off person back then” she had continued.
“I tend to agree. I was not fully…grounded back then I suppose” the smile on his face slowly morphed to a frown. He had always wanted to protect people in his youth but it had been Homura, this woman, who had indirectly led him to face the fact that he could save everyone. He still had not thanked her for that. He looked at her glancing off into the distance and could help but remember how beautiful she was. He soon found himself caught up in his own mind with no clear train of thought dominating.
They stood there, silent, for at least a half an hour. Neither spoke because they needed no words since they knew each other so well. She knew that he was lost in thought and he knew, likewise, that she was lost in memories. They both had tendencies to do that and their mutual friends said it was a bad habit for both of them but perhaps that was one of the reason’s they got along so well.
Hisao broke the silence “I suppose I should continue my patrol.” Homura, snapping back to reality, nodded to him. “See you at the library after this?” he asked before heading off. She gave him thumbs up as she turned and leapt off into the distance. The grin reappeared on Hisao’s face. Somehow Homura had a way of making him smile without saying anything and he already was looking forward to seeing her and his other friends later.
