With the Captains suffering casualties and heavy injuries on their side, all hope seemed to be lost... until Shinji Hirako appeared, along with the rest of the former Shinigami. Though the aid of the Vizards certainly helped to draw the battle in their favor, it seemed Aizen's power alone proved too much for them.
He looked around and noticed all the works on the ground. It did explain a lot. She did have a mural to paint after all. He gave her another look. Feeling a small sense of pride he offered her a small smile. Izaya really was proud of her. Her accomplishments gave him an odd emotion. Was it some form of empathy? He was actually happy for her. It was so odd.
"Really now. Are they drafts for your mural? They look pretty good from what I can see. You're a good artist Kin-chan...I'm...ummmm...ermmmm...eh, proud of you and stuff."
He sat down his soup and kind of scratched the back of his head nervously. It was odd to express such emotions. Frankly, he had been giving her too much of his emotions in the recent past. There was the whole thing between him and her. And now there was this. Damn, there was just too much emotion. Izaya didn't like this. He didn't like this one bit.
She then talked about how his room was probably just dusty instead of messy. He gave a small laugh at this and planned a small retort.
"Oh no Kin-chan, my shit has a life of its own. If I'm not there to keep it in line it run freely and doesn't bother to pick itself up. It really quite annoying."
"Well, no one ever accused me of being polite,"
Izaya gave a sharp laugh and smiled at her some more. She had said that before, he thought. It was true, she wasn't always the most polite person. However, something about that made sense to him. She didn't take any of his shit; she didn't let him get away with anything. That certainly wasn't polite.
"No one ever did. I certainly didn't. You don't put up with people's shit. You also, might I add, don't let me get away with anything. At first I hated it. You really pissed me off way back when. But...now, I don't know. It seems, a lot more appealing. I don't get it. It's damned illogical. Your impoliteness is like drawing me in and I don't know why."
Kin, for once, did not see anything wrong with taking the compliment. She smiled to Izaya, even though her cheeks were swollen with her unswallowed food. In a huge gulp, that was gone too. She closed the box and set it aside.
"Thanks, Izaya-kun," she said, smiling to the shinigami beside her. It must have been awkward for him, because it was awkward for her. She had learned not to expect much emotion from Izaya, and now he was trying his best to be genuine. She could see that - he hadn't lied to her about at least a few things.
But something about her hoped he didn't mean what he had said when he got drunk that one time. About...her being pretty, or about loving her. That couldn't have been real - she really hoped it wasn't.
"Oh no, Kin-chan, my shit has a life of its own. If I'm not there to keep it in line, it runs freely and doesn't bother to pick itself up," Izaya laughed. Kin smirked too, bringing her knees to her chest and resting her chin on them.
"Funny, I know a shinigami who does the same thing."
She listened as he said that he liked that she didn't take shit from anyone. Well, that was true. She told people what she thought, almost always. She knew how to manipulate people only because she knew how to provoke them. It was just a matter of what she kept to herself and what she said, and after a while she didn't even have to worry about that.
"Your impoliteness is drawing me in and I don't know why."
She leaned in to wrap an arm around him lightly. "Is that your way of asking for a hug?"

"Funny, I know a shinigami who does the same thing."
He smiled at her and sighed slightly. "Yes Kin-chan, when you're not there I just fall all over myself. I can't even put myself back in my proper place. And when I finally do find my way back to the dresser I'm a lot worse for the wear." He gave her a small laugh and finished his soup. He set it down to his left side before looking at his feet. He couldn't meet her gaze right now.
Suddenly, she leaned in to him and wrapped an arm around him. He looked up and placed his head near hers. The hug inspired a type of warmth in him. He didn't know what it was or why it gave him that. All he knew was that he wasn't cold in her arms. He wore a small blush on his face as his eyes just widened. He felt like a small child being comforted after a bad dream. Everything just seemed to melt away. Even his ribs didn't hurt right now. Izaya couldn't comprehend what was happening. He was becoming...lost in the moment.
His arm just seemed to react on its own. It slid forward and rested up her back. His hand ended up almost to her left shoulder and his fingers spread out. Inhaling sharply, he took in all of her scent and closed his eyes. He didn't know what it was about her but he felt...safe. Yes, that was it, he felt safe right here. It was crazy and illogical. But, he felt safe right here with Kin.
"Is that your way of asking for a hug?"
"Kin-chan, I've never been hugged. So this, this is what it is. Not bad. I kind of like it. Can...ummm...can you...can I...Kin-chan, can we do this more often?"
Kin allowed Izaya to hug her for a moment, and then, after he asked if they could do it more often, she pushed him off.
"Nope. I don't like touching," she said flatly, and with a smirk. Sure, she had just given him a hug and let him hug her back...but that wasn't the point. He'd been through a lot, and she gave him a pity hug. It was like a G-rated version of pity sex. And he wasn't getting any pity sex.
"Now get out, I have some work to do," she said, still grinning. "I want to finish the samples before next week. Then I'm painting the mural."
Character List "Let's eat, Grandma!" "Let's eat Grandma!" Commas save lives.
BAM! That perfect moment was crushed. The worst thing was that she was actually smirking at him. That just wasn't right, not right in the slightest. Now he was cold again and it didn't agree with him. It was like stepping out of his inner world; the sudden shock of it left him breathless. Izaya shook his head a little at her smirk. It was uncalled for, like she was taunting him.
Standing up, he stretched out his good arm. He was going to leave now. To be perfectly honest, the rejection had hurt him a little. He wasn't going to admit that to Kin but it did. Actually, he was surprised at how quickly he had even admitted it to himself. That whole "near-dying" thing changed a person. He shot her a cold glance before turning and wading through the shit that littered her floor. Actually, he stepped on a thing or two. Left her be as upset as he was.
Passing through her door, Izaya didn't even bother to shut it. As far as he was concerned, she could do that too. He continued out her door and began walking back to her room. She wouldn't come after him; she didn't care. Izaya hadn't even bothered to say goodbye. Kin didn't deserve it.
