Kisuke Urahara is one of the more unique and interesting characters in the bleach series. By his own admission he is a "mere honest, handsome, perverted businessman." But this self description is modest. When he was young he often seemed nervous and unsure of himself, as well as clumsy. When he was first promoted to captain he was late to his first captain's meeting. He became overwhelmed by his responsibilities as captain and couldn't find a way to handle his vice captain Hiyori. She was constantly hitting him and showed no respect. Kisuke never got angry with her, he just took the abuse with a smile on his face and tried to joke around with her. One time when she went to kick him in the face he dodged it with ease, then moved back in the way of the kick to get hit on purpose. This whole unsure of himself, clumsy and jokey personality he had may have all been a cover though. He is one of the only captains to have an idea on what is going on during the disappearences. Also he is the head of the research institute which is an example of his intelligence. Kisuke is also not afraid to bend the rules. Not only was he researching forbidden things such as hollowfication, but he disobeyed a direct order from Yamamoto.

Much of Kisuke's present day personality is mysterious. He is in someway almost always connected to the major events of the story, but it is usually unclear how. He clearly knows more about major situations than most of the characters involved, yet decides to keep his information to himself. He comes off as a chess player moving his pawns into battle, without their knowledge that he is doing it. Much of what Kisuke does is a secret, and so is much of his personality.

Appearance:

Kisuke is a normal sized white male in his mid twenties to early thirties. In the turn back the pendulum arc he has a clean face with medium length, light blonde hair and deep blue eyes. As a captain he wears the normal outfit with the white haori over it and a white sash. He doesn't really wear anything to make him stick out from the other captains.




In the present time he wears a very unique outfit. He wears a dark green shirt and matching green pants. Over the green shirt he wears a black haori with white diamonds across the bottom of it. He wears the traditional Japanese sandals. His signature green and white striped bucket hat is on almost all the time. The hat often casts a shadow over his eyes.

Zanpakuto Spirit:

Benihime (Crimson Princess)

Little is currently known about Benihime other than the fact that she is one of the few female Zanpakuto spirits and also that Kisuke describes her as "Not Nice". This coupled with the fact that his zanpakuto has some sort of power associated with blood it can be expected that Benihime is a very violent and sadistic spirit.

Sealed Zanpakuto:

In the turn back the pendulum arc the sealed state of Benihime is an ordinary looking zanpakuto with a flower shaped guard and a black handle. Since his expulsion from the Seireitai the zanpakuto has taken a different form. The sheath appears to be a cane and the handle appears to be a handle of a cane. This is so he can blend in with the people of the human world.

Shikai Description:

Name: Benihime
Release Command: "Awaken Now" (Okiro)



When in its shikai released state Benihime grows in size and thickness. The dull side of the blade is black while the blade istelf is silver. The blade is connected to the handle by a gold "U" like structure but there is no hand guard. Around the area where the hand guard would be is a red string which is tied around the sword. The handle is gold and is covered with a black cloth that criss crosses downward leaving diamond shape areas where the gold handle can be seen. At the bottom of the handle the sword bends and has a gold cap on the end. Attached to the cap is a red tassel.

While not an ability of his shikai, Kisuke has shown that he is able to create

Shikai Abilities:

Kisuke's zanpakuto uses the manipulation of blood for its attacks. The attacks he has used thus far are activated by the verbal command "Sing".

1. Chikasumi no Tate (Blood Mist Shield): This defensive move creates a shield in the shape of an oval and made of blood in front of Kisuke. The shield was shown to be strong enough to block Ichigo's getsuga tensho with only slight damage to it.



2. Red Attack: This attack has yet to been given a name. It closely resembles Ichigo's getsuga tensho but with a much brighter red. The attack was shown to evenly match Ichigo's getsuga tensho and easily blow away Yammy's cero. Kisuke has also been shown to have the ability to control the intensity of the attack.

Bankai Description:

Though it has not yet been revealed there has been some discussion about Kisuke's bankai. Its known that he achieved it in the same way Ichigo got his, through the 3-day training with Yoruichi. It is also speculated that it is very violent and deadly when he tells Renji that his bankai is not the type that is used to train others.

History/Background:

Kisuke Urahara originally lived with Yoruichi and Tessai in a undisclosed mansion. At some point while living there he and Yoruichi decided to join the Gotei 13. Through hard training and dedication he rose to the second division third seat under Yoruichi. While in this position he was also put in charge of the 3rd unit, the detention facility. It is here that he met future captain and head of the research unit, Mayuri Kurotsuchi.

When the captain of the 12th division Kirio Hikifune was promoted to the Zero Division, Yoruichi offered Kisuke's name as a possible replacement. Kisuke passed the captains test with flying colors and was promoted to Captain of the 12th division. Kisuke also became the first president of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute.

Not long after his promotion mysterious things started happening in the soul society. People were disappearing, but they were far from normal disappearences. The people's spiritual energy was being broken down by an unknown source causing the people to literally disappear into thin air, leaving behind only their clothing. A team is sent out to investigate the situation and included Kisuke's VC Hiyori. This was unsettling for Kisuke as he feared for his VC. When communication was lost with the unit Kisuke defied orders from Yamamoto and followed the special investigation team. He is stopped by Tessai who decided to accompany him. They arrive just in time to save Hirako from Aizen. Aizen swiftly disappears as he has other matters to tend to. Kisuke discovers that the squad has been hollowfied.

Upon his return to the Seireitai both Kisuke and Tessai are investigated. It was discovered that Kisuke had been researching hollowfication so he became the prime suspect in the investigation. Tessai was also in trouble for using forbidden Kido. Both of them were tried, and sentenced to death. Before they could be executed they were both rescued by Yoruichi who brought them, the hollowfied shinigami, and a new type of gigai Kisuke was working on. Using the gigai they all escape into the real world where they resided until the current events. It is revealed that while in the real world Kisuke and Tessai opened up a store selling items to shinigami who need to live in the real world without being noticed. He also meets Isshin Kurosaki and Ryuken Ishida.

He later meets Ichigo Kurosaki and seeing his unique potential decides to help train him. Throughout the story Kisuke seems to be more aware of what is going on than most characters, yet he chooses to keep it to himself.

Kisuke sat in his shop thinking of the coming events and how he was going to deal with them. He knew that soon Aizen would make his move against Kurakura town so he had made pillars that would effectively transfer the real Kurakura town to the seireitai while he could replace it with a replica. "What to do.....what to do...." Kisuke was deep in thought when Ichigo entered with Yoruichi. "Whats up Kisuke?" Ichigo said. Kisuke looked at him with a smile "Oh nothing, just trying to figure out how to make some money for the shop." he responded. Yoruichi saw immediately that look on Kisuke's face when they entered the room, she knew he was troubled over something. "Hey Ichigo, could you leave me and Kisuke alone for a minute?" Yoruichi asked. "Uh..sure." Ichigo said with a confused look on his face. Ichigo left the room leaving Kisuke and Yoruichi to talk. "Whats bothering you Kisuke?" she inquired. "Oh its nothing, just thinking about.....uh.....things, ya know." Kisuke responded with a wide smile on his face. Yoruichi lunged across the table and his Kisuke in the head. "Now tell me what you were thinking about, I know you, and you were worrying about something when I walked in here. Something serious." Kisuke sighed, he didn't want to talk about this right now but it seemed Yoruichi was leaving him no choice. "Fine, fine. I was just thinking about Aizen and what to do. Ichigo isn't strong enough to face him yet. . .I just don't know how to make him stronger..." A light went off in Kisuke's head. "But maybe I don't have to...." he said. Yoruichi stared at him with a blank expression. "Well its been a good chat Yoruichi, but I have to go somewhere, I'll see ya later." Kisuke said with a wide smile on his face.

Kisuke burst into the warehouse and walked up to Hirako Shinji. "Shinji! Long time no see!" Shinji looked bewildered at the long time friend. "What can I do for you Kisuke? You rarely come to visit without the need for something." Shinji said in an accusatory tone. Kisuke laughed and said "Well theres been these rumors. . .of a new vizard." Shinji's eyes lit up with curiosity. "A new vizard? What are you talking about." Kisuke's smile widened; 'he's taking the bait' Kisuke thought to himself. "Oh its just this boy, the son of Isshin Kurosaki, Ichigo. They say hes the strongest vizard to come through in a looooong time. You should pay him a visit and see how much he knows." Shinji's eyes dimmed down a little "Psh. . .come on Kisuke you know I can see through your games. Why do you want me to train him?" "Haha. . .you always were a smart one Shinji." Kisuke's expression grew serious. "Hes the one, the one who is going to defeat Aizen. But he isn't strong enough yet. I can't train his vizard side, as I don't have it myself. I need you to get him stronger." Kisuke revealed. "What makes you think I want to help the brat?" Kisuke looked more serious now, "You know how much of a threat Aizen is. You, the Shinigami, the humans, we all have as much stake in his destruction. And I know you have a personal bone to pick with him. This may be our only way." Shinji looked very serious at the sound of Aizen's name. "I see, well where can I find this "Ichigo?""

Kisuke walked out of the warehouse with a smirk on his face. "That went better than I had expected. One more piece is in place." Kisuke continued down the sidewalk towards his shop.
