Skill Level: Swordsmanship: Advanced
Skill Level: Shunpou: Advanced
Skill Level: Hand-to-hand: Beginner
History/Background:
Age: 140
Gender: Male
Personality:
Zaru is a somewhat quiet person. He believes he is a very powerful shinigami and sometimes overestimates his own power. He doesn't however hesitate to talk or give orders when need be. If he's in the right mood, he'll make a joke or two and won't be antisocial but he doesn't tend to talk much with people he does not know.Appearance:
Zaru is 6'2" and wears the standard black kimono of a shinigami, black gloves that stretch up to his elbow, black socks, typical shinigami sandals, a black t-shirt underneath the kimono, and most importantly a large, yellow mask that stretches past, but does not cover the back of head. This mask, while active, sets a cap on how high Zaru's reiatsu level can get to. The mask can be deactivated by a switch located on inside of the mask on the left side around the ear or of course by removing it entirely. Zaru wears his zanpakuto on his back at an angle but when fighting he clips the sheath to his waist in case he needs it.Zanpakuto Spirit:
The name of Zaru's zanpakuto is Raijin. Raijin manifests itself in the form of a huge dragon with a snake like body (similar to Shenron from DBZ) with a few pairs of short, three clawed arms along it's body. Raijin is blue with a sliver underbelly and two, glowing, pure yellow eyes.Sealed Zanpakuto:
The world where Raijin resides is a large field with grass about ankle-high. In this world it is always cloudy and rainy. Lightining flashes constantly lighting up the clouds and every few seconds escapes the clouds and can be seen from the ground. When summoned, Raijin extends from these clouds causing the thunder and lightning to occur more frequently and the rain to fall harder.
In it's sealed state, the zanpakuto is a reverse handle katana (the blade and hilt are curved in opposite directions) with a blade about 3 feet long roughly. The hilt is covered partially by silver cloth that criss-crosses it's way down the hilt (similar to most zanpakuto) with yellow in the exposed areas. The guard has a dragon (Raijin) circling it and is gold in color.Shikai Description:
The release command for Raijin is "Spark, Raijin!". In it's Shikai state, the zanpakuto has two blades at each end of the hilt which looks the same as it did in the sealed state but is no longer curved. Each blade is about 2'9" feet long and is shaped like a wide lightning bolt. The hilt is about 1 foot long giving the zanpakuto a total length of 6 and 1/2 feet.Shikai Abilities:
Raikyoshou: A pure yellow blast of lightning mixed with Zaru's reiatsu that's strength depends on how long it is charged. The blast can either be fast but relatively weak which requires hardly any charge, or slower but strong which requires 4-6 seconds to charge.Bankai Description:
When Zaru channels his reiatsu through his blade in shikai, the blades glow pure yellow and the cutting power of each blade is enhanced.
When the shikai state is released, after a while, dark grey clouds begin to cover the sky where Zaru is fightning. This does not really effect the fight to a large degree or do anything for Zaru or Raijin while in Shikai state.
Ikazuchiryu Raijin (Thunder Dragon Lightning God)Bankai Abilities:
In it's Bankai state, the zanpakuto becomes "H" shaped. Two half-lightning bolts serve as the legs and the hilt, which looks the same as it did in Shikai, connects the two blades. Each blade is about 5 feet long and the hilt is still 1 foot long. The whole blade itself is wielded in Zaru's right hand.
Zaru also wields a shield in his left hand in Bankai. The shield is 5 and 1/2 feet in diameter and has rounded bolt-heads circling the outer edge of the shield. The shield is dark grey and slightly browned from rust and also bears a dragon (Raijin) seen from the side, on the front.
Raikyoshou: The ability is basically the same as it was in shikai but naturally, is stronger overall. A fast/weak Raikyoshou in Bankai is stronger than a slow/strong Raikyoshou in Shikai. Also, the slow/strong Raikyoshou in Bankai takes the shape of Raijin except without arms and red "eyes".Skill Level: Kidou: Beginner
The shield can be willed by Zaru to emit a layer of his reiatsu which can deflect any medium and lower strength, reiatsu based attack off the shield and away from Zaru. The reiatsu layer can not deflect away an non-reiatsu based attack such as a blade or solid projectile and a reiatsu based attack that is strong enough can break through the reiatsu layer and, if large enough to get around the shield, hit Zaru.
Hyakuraisenshi: From the clouds above (see final shikai ability), one hundred lightning bolts strike a target that Zaru focuses on. This attack takes a lot of accuracy and focus from Zaru so the attack is usually only used once per opponent (or fight if there are multiple opponents since they could then anticipate the attack) since they usually do not expect an attack from the sky. Unlike the Raikyoshou, the strength of this attack remains the same despite the condition or strain of Zaru since the attack is not directly connected to Zaru's reiatsu.

History/Background:
Zaru spent most of his life wandering around Rukongai, moving frequently from district to district. During the 5 years prior to his entering into the Spiritual Arts Academy, Zaru became subject to random spikes in reiatsu causing him to temporarily crazy destroying and killing everything that approached him. These outrages lasted around 2 hours and at first occurred every few weeks. The frequency and degree of these outrages slowly increased during these five years until they occurred every other day and went almost completely beyond control.RP Sample:
These spikes threatened to consume Zaru entirely and nearly did until one night when, during one of the outrages, Zaru attacked a group of Shinigami on a hunt for hollow. Zaru succeeded in killing three shinigami before he was bound by the Kidou of one of the 7th squad seated officers. Before the Shinigami made the decision to kill Zaru, the reiatsu spike ended and Zaru passed out. The officer then decided to take Zaru back for examination by the Gotei 13.
Since Zaru's actions had not been intentional, he was not tried for the murder of the three shinigami, despite the oppinion of many other Shinigami. Given Zaru's potential, he was admitted into the Spiritual Arts academy and was given a mask designed by the Technological Research Bureau to hold his reiatsu in check, thus ending the reiatsu spikes. After his seventh year, Zaru graduated and became a full fledged Shinigami.
Zaru was admitted into the 11th squad, partly because of his skill in swordsmanship and partly because of his lack of skill in Kidou. 5 years later, upon his achieving Shikai, Zaru became a seated officer in the 11th squad. Zaru continued to slowly move up in the ranks of the 11th squad in an attempt to get closer to Kenpachi Zaraki.
Zaraki was an important man in Zaru's life after he killed the former 11th squad captain and became the new captain. After seeing how strong his new captain was, he became honored to serve under Zaraki and was motivated to move up in the ranks. As he moved up in the ranks, Zaru began to dream of being the 11th squad captain. This dream soon became a goal of Zaru's and the only way he felt possible of achieving this goal was to kill Kenpachi in a fair fight. Despite this goal, Zaru was still content with fighting under Zaraki and 12 years after his becoming a seated officer, he achieved Bankai and was promoted to 6th seat of the 11th squad.
Zaru's Shikai:
"OOOOOYYYYY Zaru. Get your ass out here!" Shouhan shouted. The whole crowd looked around for Zaru, waiting to see if he would step up to 10th seat Shouhan Mizuno's challenge. Shouhan had spent the last hour challenging and defeating unseated officers. For Shouhan and many of the Shinigami, this was a whole lot of fun but for the unseated officers of the 11th squad who fought Shouhan, it was the furthest thing from it.
"C'mon you pansy! Fight me and join the rest of the losers I beat!" Shouhan shouted, growing angry.
Just when it seemed like he wouldn't step up, Zaru emerged from the crowd. His zanpakuto was at his waist and his hand was already on the hilt. Zaru stepped into the alley and drew his zanpakuto, realizing that there was no backing down now since his front was blocked by Shouhan, his back by a dead end at the end of the short alleyway, his right by the crowd and his left by a wall.
"Finally, took you long enough. I hope your ready to be crushed like the weakling you are" Shouhan said in a cocky attitude.
"I wouldn't overestimate your abilities so much...idiot." Zaru replied.
Enraged, Shouhan charged at Zaru swinging first at his body. Zaru blockedthe blade with his own and attempted to stab Shouhan's chest. Shouhan simply stepped backwards out of the blade's reach and swung at Zaru's feet. Zaru jumped reflexively but realized to late that it was the wrong move. Shouhan continued his swing up over his head and came back around at Zaru's airborne body. Zaru blocked the swing but it's force pressed him into the wall causing him to land off balance on his feet. Shouhan kept up his offense swinging his zanpakuto from every angle he could. Zaru attempted to block as many of the strikes as he could but a few of them got through leaving multiple cuts on Zaru's body. Angered, Zaru shifted his stance and began taking his own swings at Shouhan. Shouhan, taken off balance, blocked all but one of Zaru's swings leaving a decent cut in his stomach. But this only seemed to make him angrier. He leaped at Zaru, no longer holding back. Zaru was good with a sword but he couldn't hold back the barrage of ferocious swings from Shouhan. One after another Shouhan's zanpakuto made contact with Zaru's body until Zaru was hardly blocking anymore. Zaru was being beaten badly and Shouhan didn't care that Zaru was already defeated. Finally Shouhan made one last slice in Zaru's chest. Zaru looked down at the blood flowing out of his chest and could hardly believe it. He then fell over on his back and began to panic.
"This can't be it....this can't be the end for me....it can't be! NOOO!" Zaru screamed in desperation.
It was then that Zaru felt something. It felt like something washing over him.
"Is this death....or am I just losing conciousness? Maybe it's another reiatsu spike. Is the mask broken? No...this is different..." Zaru thought to himself.
Zaru then found himself standing up. His wounds had dissapeared. and his zanpakuto was back in it's sheath at his waist. He was no longer standing in the alley. As far as he knew, he wasn't even in the Seireitei anymore. He was in a grassy field. It was raining, and very overcast. He could hear the roll of thunder and see the flash of lightning every few seconds. Zaru looked up into the clouds. He could sense something was there.
Just as soon as he sensed the pressence of whatever was in the clouds, the rain began to fall harder. The sound of thunder grew louder and lightning flashed even more frequently. From the clouds descended the mightiest thing Zaru had ever seen: An enormous blue dragon with brilliant yellow eyes.
"Zaru, you are weak without me..." The dragon said slowly, in a deep voice.
"How do you know my name?" Zaru asked in an almost frightened voice.
"I have known your name ever since you first wielded me. I have been a part of you for as long as you have existed." The dragon replied.
"You, your my zanpakuto! How are you doing this?" Zaru said with shock.
"That is not important. Now...i'll ask you. Do you want power? Do you want to become stronger? Do you want to survive?" The dragon asked, lightning flashing all around him.
"No...I NEED power...I HAVE to become strong...and...I NEED TO SURVIVE!!!" Zaru shouted in a now strong voice.
"Then I will show you how to do all of these things. I will guide you and show you how to truly wield me. But first you must no my name...." The dragon said, his voice growing quieter.
Shouhan turned his back to his fallen opponent, spat at the ground, and sheathed his sword. He walked away triumphantly but then stopped. Behind him, he felt Zaru's spiritual pressure increasing. He turned around absolutely stunned as the man he was sure he killed climbed back up to his feet. Zaru looked at Shouhan with a look that shook him to the core. Zaru's spiritual kept increasing until Shouhan could see it's yellow energy radiating off Zaru. Zaru then unsheathed his sword and switched his grip so the blade and his thumb were on opposite sides of his hand. Zaru then took his left hand and slid it along the blade, over and past the hilt.
"Spark, Raijin!" Zaru declared strongly.
Zaru's zanpakuto glowed yellow as he passed his hand over it and the blade transformed into a double sided zanpakuto. Each blade was shaped like a lightning bolt and Zaru's reiatsu jumped.
"Th-that's impossible! When did you reach Shikai?!" Shouhan yelled awstruck.
Zaru didn't say a word. He walked towards Shouhan who began to panic. Shouhan raised his blade when Zaru grew closer to him and attempted to slice Zaru in half. Zaru placed his now large zanpakuto into the air blocking Shouhan's blade with easy. Zaru then twisted his wrist bringing the other end of the zanpakuto up and across Shouhan's body leaving an identical cut to Zaru's on Shouhan's chest. Shouhan collapsed in a heap and lost conciousness. Zaru lowered his zanpakuto and relaxed. His zanpakuto glowed yellow again and returned to it's sealed form. Zaru placed it back in it's sheath and fell over, exhausted but proud.
