"I read quite a bit, though not as much as some people I can mention." Makuro replied with a smile as he took another bite of his panini before licking his lips. "Delicious." he said and then added so only she could hear so as not to offend those who ran the bar. "But I have had better." He finished his panini and then wiped his mouth.
"Very nice and all the better due to having such good company." he said with a broad smile. "I see you like the sweet things. Suits you perfectly."

Azuki polished off her plate of pancakes. Sugar always put her in a better mood. The bacon was scrumptious, and complemented the sweet with salty. "Well, the library isn't exactly a horrible place to stay on a rainy day," Azuki remarked, fondly remembering endless days spent within the walls. "Yeah, well, I guess you can say fond memories," she added, thinking how the old lady used to give her sweet things. She smiled at the shinigami across the table. "So, how are you?" she threw the painfully normal question out.

Makuro thought about this question. It was simplistic yet difficult to answer. He yanwed and then blushed slightly. "Well as you can tell i'm a bit tired." he said with a nervous smile. "But other then that i'm pretty good. It was a good patrol." he thought about something to reply. Asking how she was seemed so unimaginative. Instead, he decided to go a bit more personal.
"So you more of a kido user or a zanjutsu fighter?" he asked. He hated that he had gone to fighting talk. Normally, he was quite flirty, but he was too tired really. "I personally try to balance them out, but I suppose I specialise in shunpo most, I want to be the god of flash." He smiled proudly. "I reckon soon i'll be as good as Byakuya and Yoruichi."

Azuki leaned back in her chair, relaxing her position for once. She listened as Makuro told her a bit about himself. God of Flash, huh? She really didn't normally talk about personal things with strangers. She shuddered at the thought of her last experience. "I am more a zanjutsu fighter. Kido just never really came to me. I mean," she replied, blushing a little from embarrassment, "If I practice for hours, I can get it, otherwise, not so much."
Fighting talk often bored Azuki and embarrassed her a bit. So, she changed the subject. Makuro seemed interesting enough, so she made the effort to get to know him. "So, why did you decide to become a shinigami?" She hoped the answer wasn't too personal.

"It wasn't really a choice that I made. It was made for me." he replied with a shrug. "I'm part of the Fumaseki family and a majority of us become shinigami." he explained. "Though I was glad I made the choice. It gives me the strength and skills needed for one of my goals." He thought about this. "I will be the next leader of my family when my grandfather dies or steps down."

"Oh wow," Azuki replied. "I guess I don't truly understand the whole 'inheriting family' thing. Since I'm an orphan and all. I can only imagine how hard it is for you." Images of the old lady who took care of her raced through Azuki's mind. Maybe she wasn't fit company for Makuro, being a regular person and all. "It must've been rough growing up like that," she muttered as much to Makuro as to herself.

Makuro was surprised at her response, but he was quite glad actually. The reason for this was that whenever he mentioned that he would inherit the leadership after his grandfather most people asked about his father. To which he would respond with silence and possibly leaving and if they persisted he would lash out. However, she seemed to be one going quiet. Perhaps his noble blood was causing her to believe she was beneath him.
"Don't worry about my blood. Its the same as yours just from a different family. There is nothing special about it except the rules that it means you have to follow." he said with a kind smile. "Respect has to be earned and I don't expect you to respect me or bow down because I am nobility. I prefer to be treated as ya average guy because thats what I am." He poured them both another glass of sake. "And it had its good points and bad points growing up as nobility. You don't get as much freedom as others, but you get more expensive things." he shrugged. Nobility really wasn't all it was cracked up to be. "I don't like to rely too much on my family though. I prefer to cut my own path. My family offered me places in pretty much every squad and their influence would get me there, but I chose to earn my own way."

Azuki marveled at the person in front of her. He was able to humble himself, instead of acting haughty, like she expected. Instead, he simply stated what he saw as fact. It fascinated her. Makuro's work ethic surprised her the most. Instead of letting his family win his battles, he fights for himself. That is something she could relate to and respect.
"Yeah, I guess that's what we're all trying to do in some way, you know? Being an orphan never made me popular by any means, and I worked nonstop to help the old lady who took me in. Instead of playing in the woods or running around with kids my age, I manned a shop and handled money," Azuki gave a small chuckle at the thought. "I guess you can say that few people actually knew me. Apparently I scared them. Dunno why..." She lapsed into silence for a moment, absently sipping her small cup of sake.

"And you thought my life was tough?" he said with a chuckle and a shake of his head. "Your life sounds a lot tougher." He looked at her for a moment thinking about what she had said. "If i'm honest I have no idea why anyone would be scared of you. Your too cute." he flirted. "Only people i really hung around with was other members of my family or my tutors. I knew a lot of the four shinigami arts before I even started the academy." He sipped his sake quietly waiting for her to respond. Makuro was generally polite, but was not a stiff for it like Byakuya. Then he added. "Well...its pretty tought making friends when your a noble. Even when your older. You tell people and they think your gonna be like Byakuya-taichou." he chuckled again. "Hard to believe that guy was ever married."

Azuki blushed a bit at Makuro's compliment. "It is odd to think that Byakuya-taichou ever had a wife. But it did happen, somehow," she replied, chuckling along with him. "But, yeah, I don't know why people were afraid of me. Something about some scary look. At least that's what the kid I cornered told me," Azuki thoughtfully addressed the earlier subject. "So, royalty doesn't sound to be all that it's cracked up to be, huh?"
